ARB Simpson III: The Expedition Workhorse

Running a full-size truck or a purpose-built overland rig with a roof rack rated above 500 lbs? The ARB Simpson III deserves serious consideration. It’s a soft-shell tent, but ARB builds it like they build lockers — overengineered for punishment.

The Simpson III has a 600D polyester ripstop fly with a 4,000mm hydrostatic head rating — the highest waterproofing spec I’ve tested in this category. The aluminum poles are 19mm diameter, thicker than the 16mm poles on most competitor soft-shells. In 50 mph gusts on a Wyoming plateau, I’ve had soft-shell tents flap themselves half to death. Setup takes me about 6 minutes. The folding ladder is the weakest point — rung spacing is 12 inches, which is fine for most adults but awkward for shorter climbers, and it flexes more than I’d like under a loaded pack. Functional, not confidence-inspiring.

Smittybilt Overlander XL: The Budget Case

The Smittybilt Overlander XL is not in the same league as the three tents above. It sells for around $699, it’s on Amazon Prime, and plenty of people are going to buy it regardless of what I write. So here’s what you’re actually getting.

The Overlander XL has a 600D polyester shell with a 1,500mm hydrostatic head rating. Adequate for 3-season camping in mild conditions. In a genuine downpour, you’ll feel dampness on the tent body interior — not a full leak, but not the dry cocoon you get from the Tepui or ARB. The 2.5-inch foam mattress is the tent’s strongest feature. It’s legitimately comfortable.

Dry weight is 122 lbs. Setup is 8–10 minutes the first few times, dropping to about 6 minutes once you’ve got the pole sequence memorized. The aluminum ladder is 7 feet and feels stable — better than the Tepui’s ladder, actually.

Where the Smittybilt falls short is long-term durability. The zipper pulls are plastic and start degrading after two seasons of UV exposure. The mounting hardware is adequate but develops stress cracks on rigs that see regular washboard. If you’re doing paved-road camping and occasional gravel, it’ll hold up. Running technical trails regularly, budget up.

Installation: What Nobody Tells You Before You Buy

Every RTT manufacturer will tell you installation is “simple” and “takes about an hour.” True if you have the right rack, the right hardware, and a second person helping. It’s a four-hour project if you’re figuring out crossbar compatibility alone in your driveway.

Check your vehicle’s roof load rating first. This is the static load rating — the weight your roof can support while parked. Dynamic load rating (weight while moving) is typically 50% of static. Toyota Tacoma / Midsize Truck: The ARB Simpson III or Tepui Kukenam 3 is your call based on budget. The iKamper is doable with aftermarket rails but requires careful attention to load ratings. Skip the Smittybilt if you’re running trails — the mounting hardware isn’t up to sustained washboard.

4Runner / Land Cruiser / Defender: Any tent on this list works. The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 is the natural fit — these platforms are built for expedition use and the weight is manageable. The ARB Simpson III pairs especially well with Land Cruiser builds that already run ARB bumpers and lockers.

Jeep Wrangler (2-door): Weight is your constraint. The Tepui Kukenam 3 at 118 lbs is the heaviest I’d go. The Smittybilt Overlander at 122 lbs is borderline. Avoid hardshells on short-wheelbase Wranglers.

Jeep Wrangler (4-door) / Gladiator: The longer wheelbase opens up your options. The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 works well here, and the Gladiator’s bed rack options give you mounting flexibility that other Jeep configurations don’t.

Ford Bronco (4-door): I run the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 on mine. The Bronco’s factory roof rails are rated to 150 lbs dynamic — you need aftermarket rails for the Skycamp. The Ford Performance Modular Roof Rack is rated to 350 lbs dynamic and is worth the investment.

Pickup Bed Rack: If you’re running a bed rack instead of a roof mount, all four tents work, and vehicle dynamics concerns drop significantly since the weight is lower and over the rear axle. The ARB Simpson III is particularly popular in this configuration because the annex room integrates cleanly with a truck bed setup.

Long-Term Durability: What Fails and When

After eight years of RTT use across multiple tents, here’s what actually wears out.

Zippers are the first failure point on every soft-shell tent. YKK #10 zippers outlast the off-brand hardware on budget tents by a wide margin. The ARB Simpson III uses YKK throughout. The Tepui Kukenam 3 uses YKK on the main entry but not on the storage pockets. The Smittybilt uses proprietary zippers that are harder to source for field repair.

Foam mattresses compress over time. The 2.5-inch foam in the iKamper retains about 85% of its loft after three seasons of regular use in my experience. Budget tent foams compress faster — I’ve seen Smittybilt mattresses lose noticeable loft within 18 months of heavy use.

Gas struts on hardshell tents lose pressure after 4–6 years. Replacement struts for the iKamper run about $80 per pair and are a straightforward swap. Budget for it.

If you want expedition-grade weather sealing at a lower price point and don’t mind 6–7 minutes of setup, the ARB Simpson III is the call. It’s what I’d put on a rig that already runs ARB components — consistent parts support and warranty service across the whole build.

Get the mounting hardware right before you worry about tent features. A $3,500 tent on a compromised rack is a worse outcome than a $1,100 tent on a properly rated system.
