Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT — Best for Heavy Rigs

Best Mud-Terrain Overlanding Tires 2025

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 — The Benchmark Mud-Terrain

The KM3 is to mud-terrains what the KO2 is to all-terrains: the tire everything else gets measured against. BFGoodrich redesigned the compound from the KM2 with their Krawl-TEK formulation, engineered specifically for rock grip, and the difference on granite and sandstone is real. Sizing: Getting the Numbers Right Before You Order

Tire sizing for overlanding builds affects your speedometer calibration, fuel economy, and load capacity — not just fender clearance. Get this wrong and you’re either rubbing at full articulation or running a tire that’s underrated for your loaded vehicle weight.

Load Range E vs. D

Load Range E (10-ply equivalent) is the standard for overlanding builds on full-size trucks and SUVs. It runs at higher inflation pressures (typically 65–80 psi max) and carries more weight per tire. Load Range D (8-ply) is adequate for lighter vehicles — a Jeep Wrangler with minimal gear, for example — but if you’re running a loaded truck or towing, go E.

The practical difference: a Load Range E LT285/75R16 carries roughly 3,500 lbs per tire at max inflation. The same size in Load Range D carries around 2,900 lbs. On a loaded expedition rig, that 600 lb difference per tire adds up fast.

  • Jeep Wrangler JL/JK: 285/70R17 or 285/75R17 fits most builds with a 2-inch lift. 315/70R17 requires a 3.5-inch lift minimum.
  • Ford Bronco: 285/70R17 is the sweet spot for the Wildtrak and Badlands. 315/70R17 fits with a 2-inch lift and minor trimming.
  • Toyota 4Runner (5th Gen): 285/75R16 on the factory 16-inch wheels, or 285/70R17 on upgraded 17-inch wheels. Both fit with a 2-inch lift.

The Lift-Tire Size Relationship

Buy tires before confirming your lift clearance and you’ll be returning them. Every inch of additional tire diameter beyond stock requires roughly half an inch of lift to clear the fender at full articulation. Going from a 265 to a 285 is about a 1-inch diameter increase — manageable on most platforms without a lift. Going to a 315 is a 2-inch diameter jump and almost always requires suspension work.
