How to Winterize an Outboard Engine: Protect Your Investment Before Cold Months

Skip winterization and you’re gambling with a $3,000-$15,000 engine over a few hours of work. Water left in the block freezes, expands, and cracks components you can’t buy separately. I’ve seen guys try to save a weekend and end up replacing a powerhead in March. Do it right once a year and your outboard will outlast the boat it’s bolted to.

This covers outboard-specific work: flushing, fogging, lower unit service, and the fuel system. That’s where the damage happens, and that’s what we’re fixing.

Why Outboards Need This Every Year

Outboards run raw water through the block for cooling. When that water sits in freezing temps, it expands and cracks the powerhead, exhaust housing, or water pump. There’s no way around this if you’re storing the boat anywhere that hits 32°F. I don’t care if you “usually get away with it.” I’ve pulled a cracked block off a guy’s Yamaha F150 who’d gotten away with it for six years straight before he didn’t.

Beyond freeze damage, ethanol-blended fuel left sitting all winter separates and gums up carburetors and injectors. Untreated fuel is the single biggest cause of no-start problems every spring. Both issues are fixable in about two hours with basic supplies.

Step 1: Flush the Engine with Fresh Water

Before you do anything else, flush the cooling system. Run the engine on a set of flush muffs or use the built-in flush port if your outboard has one (most Yamaha and Mercury four-strokes from the last 15 years do). Run it for 10-15 minutes at idle, long enough to see the water pump indicator stream running strong and consistent.

This clears salt, sand, and mineral buildup out of the cooling passages before you fog the engine. Skip this step and you’re fogging an engine full of debris, which defeats the point.

Step 2: Fog the Engine (Don’t Skip This)

Fogging oil coats internal engine components, cylinder walls, pistons, valves, with a protective film that prevents rust and corrosion during months of sitting idle. This is the step most weekend boaters skip, and it’s the one that costs the most long-term.

With the engine running at idle (still on muffs or in a test tank), spray fogging oil directly into the air intake or carburetor throat until the engine stumbles and produces heavy white smoke. That smoke is the point. It means the oil’s coating everything on its way through. Kill the engine while it’s still smoking, not after.

I run CRC Fogging Oil on every outboard I winterize, from small kickers to a Suzuki DF300. It’s cheap insurance against a rusted cylinder wall in April.

Step 3: Change the Lower Unit Gear Oil

This is the step people forget because it’s out of sight. Water intrusion into the lower unit is common. A bad prop seal or a ding from hitting a stump is all it takes. Gear oil that looks milky or has water droplets in it means a seal’s failed, and running that gear case all winter with water inside means a cracked housing by spring.

Drain the gear oil through the lower drain plug into a clear container so you can actually inspect it. Clean oil looks like honey. Milky or gray oil means water’s in there. Get that seal fixed before you refill, not after.

Refill from the bottom up with a pump until oil flows clean out the top vent hole, then seal both plugs in the correct order: top first, then bottom, so you don’t create a vacuum lock and dump oil everywhere.

Step 4: Stabilize the Fuel System

Add fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas, not a partial tank. A full tank means less air space, which means less condensation buildup over winter. Run the engine for 10 minutes after adding stabilizer so it works through the entire fuel system, not just the tank.

I use STA-BIL 360 Marine specifically because it’s formulated for ethanol-blended fuels, which is what you’re pumping at 90% of marinas now. Regular automotive stabilizer isn’t built for the ethanol separation problem you’ll deal with in a boat tank.

If you’re storing more than four months, disconnect the fuel line and run the engine dry after treating the tank. Empty carbs mean nothing to gum up.

Step 5: Grease Fittings and External Protection

Grease every zerk fitting on the outboard: tilt tube, swivel bracket, steering cable. Salt and moisture eat these joints over winter if they’re dry. A tube of Quicksilver 2-4-C Grease and a grease gun handles this in ten minutes.

Spray the powerhead and external components with corrosion inhibitor. I use CRC Marine Corrosion Inhibitor on connectors, terminals, and any exposed metal. Store the outboard tilted down so any residual water drains out the prop, not sitting in the exhaust housing.

Common Mistakes That Wreck Engines

  • Fogging without flushing first. You’re coating debris instead of clean metal.
  • Storing the outboard tilted up. Water pools in the lower unit and freezes.
  • Skipping the gear oil check. A failed seal you don’t catch in October becomes a cracked housing in January.
  • Using stabilizer in a half-empty tank. More air equals more condensation, full stop.
  • Forgetting the battery. Disconnect it and store it charged on a trickle charger. A dead battery over winter is often permanently damaged, not just discharged.

The Verdict

Winterizing an outboard properly takes about two hours and $80-120 in supplies if you’re buying fogging oil, gear lube, a pump, and stabilizer new. Compare that to a cracked powerhead or a corroded lower unit gear case, and it’s not close. I’ve run this same process on everything from a 9.9hp Tohatsu kicker to a 300hp Yamaha, and it works the same way regardless of horsepower.

Do the flush first, fog until it smokes, check that gear oil before you refill it, stabilize a full tank, and grease every fitting. Skip any one of these and you’re rolling the dice with an engine that costs more than most used cars.
