How to Winterize an Inboard Boat Engine: Coolant, Fuel, and Storage Best Practices
Winterizing an inboard means protecting a raw-water or closed cooling system, stabilizing fuel that’ll sit for months, and getting oil and coolant into the block before the first hard freeze. Skip any one of these steps and you’re looking at a cracked block, corroded manifolds, or a no-start come spring. I’ve pulled boats out of Ozark marinas in April with exactly those problems, and every single time it traced back to a rushed winterization the previous fall.
This isn’t the same job as winterizing an outboard. Inboards run raw water or coolant through the block itself, they’ve got heat exchangers instead of just a water pump, and the fuel systems are usually bigger and more prone to phase separation over a long layup. Treat it like the outboard job and you’ll miss the parts that actually crack.
Why Inboards Need Different Treatment
Outboards and most sterndrives tilt up and drain by gravity. Inboards sit low in the hull with the block below the waterline, so water doesn’t drain on its own. It pools in the block, the manifolds, and the heat exchanger, and that trapped water is what splits a cast iron block when it freezes.
I’ve seen a Crusader 350 with a six-inch crack in the block from a single hard freeze in a Missouri boat barn that wasn’t heated. The owner thought a tarp was enough. It wasn’t.
Raw-water cooled inboards (common on older Chris-Craft and MerCruiser setups) pull lake or river water straight through the block. Closed-cooling systems use coolant in a separate loop with a heat exchanger, similar to a car radiator, and raw water only touches the exchanger, not the block. Know which system you’ve got before you start. It changes how much antifreeze you need and where it goes.
Step 1: Flush the Raw Water System
Run the engine on muffs or in a test tank with fresh water for 10-15 minutes to clear salt, silt, and debris out of the raw water intake, strainer, and heat exchanger. This matters more if you’re coming out of brackish or saltwater. I run every engine I test through a full flush cycle after saltwater use regardless of season, and it’s a non-negotiable step before winterizing.
Clean the raw water strainer basket while you’re at it. A clogged strainer is the number one reason inboards overheat in the first ten minutes after spring launch, and it’s a five-minute fix you’re already set up to do.
Step 2: Drain and Fill With Marine Antifreeze
Close the raw water seacock and disconnect the intake hose from the strainer. Run the engine briefly on a flush kit, not dry, to pull antifreeze through the entire raw water side: block, manifolds, heat exchanger, and exhaust elbows, until it discharges from the exhaust at full strength. Don’t eyeball this. Use a hydrometer or watch the color change from clear to pink consistently at the exhaust outlet.
This is where propylene glycol marine antifreeze earns its keep. Don’t use automotive antifreeze. Ethylene glycol is toxic to aquatic life, illegal to discharge in most states, and it doesn’t play well with some raw water system seals. I run Camco Pro-Pack Antifreeze/Winterizer on every boat I winterize because it’s rated to -50°F and it’s the same stuff most marinas use for their own fleet.

For closed-cooling systems, check your coolant concentration with a refractometer rather than assuming last year’s mix is still good. A 50/50 mix protects to about -34°F, which covers anything short of an unheated Minnesota boathouse. Top off with Prestone Command Marine Antifreeze if you’re low. It’s compatible with both aluminum and cast iron blocks, which matters if you’ve got a mixed-metal cooling system like a lot of Volvo Penta setups.
Step 3: Stabilize and Treat the Fuel
Fill the tank to 90-95% capacity. This isn’t about topping off for convenience. It minimizes the air space where condensation forms, and that’s what leads to phase separation in ethanol-blended fuel. A half-empty tank sitting for four months in a Wisconsin pole barn is a guaranteed water-in-fuel problem by March.
Add fuel stabilizer before you run the engine one last time, not after. You want the treated fuel circulated through the entire fuel system: lines, filters, injectors or carburetor, not just sitting in the tank. I’ve run Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment through everything from a 1998 Chaparral with a carbureted small block to a fuel-injected Volvo Penta 5.7. It’s kept fuel usable through storage periods up to eight months with zero gum or varnish buildup in the carb bowls.

Change the fuel filter/water separator now, not in spring. A filter that’s been sitting saturated with old fuel all winter is one more thing that can clog on your first start.
Step 4: Fog the Cylinders
With the engine still warm from your last run, pull the spark plugs (gas inboards) and spray fogging oil directly into each cylinder. Bump the starter for one second with plugs out and ignition disabled to distribute the oil across cylinder walls, then reinstall plugs. This prevents surface rust on cylinder walls during storage. I’ve seen it show up after a single humid winter in a closed-up boathouse, not just after years of neglect.
Diesel inboards skip this step. Fog through the intake instead if your manufacturer calls for it, but most modern marine diesels don’t need it. Check your Cummins or Yanmar service manual specifically. Don’t assume gas engine procedures carry over.
Step 5: Change Oil and Filter
Change the oil and filter before storage, not after. Used oil holds combustion acids and moisture that’ll sit against bearing surfaces all winter if you leave it in. I’ve cut open filters from boats that sat with old oil over winter and found more corrosion residue than from boats that ran hard all season. It’s the standing time that does the damage, not the mileage.
Step 6: Battery and Storage
Disconnect the battery and either remove it for indoor storage or hook it to a maintainer. A battery that sits discharged through a freeze cycle is often dead for good by spring. Cover the boat with a breathable cover, not a tight tarp that traps moisture. Shrink wrap works if you’re storing outdoors in a wet climate, but leave a vent to prevent condensation buildup inside the hull. Store on stands or a trailer with the bow slightly elevated so any residual water drains toward the transom instead of pooling in the bilge.
Do all six of these steps and your engine starts on the second or third crank come spring, every time. Skip the fuel stabilizer or the antifreeze flush and you’re rolling dice with a block that costs more to replace than most of this gear combined.
