What Do You Need for Overlanding? Complete Beginner’s Guide to Essential Gear and Skills

You need a capable vehicle, recovery gear, shelter, water, navigation tools, and the skills to use all of it — in that order of priority. Overlanding isn’t car camping with a lift kit. It’s self-supported travel through remote terrain where the nearest tow truck is two days away and one bad call turns a minor problem into a multiday ordeal.

I’ve been running overland routes since before the term was cool — back when we just called it “driving somewhere nobody else wanted to go.” I’ve crossed the Mojave in July, gotten stuck axle-deep in Montana mud in May, and spent three nights on a forest road in Colorado waiting out a storm that turned a two-track into a river. Here’s what I wish I’d known before my first real trip.

Start With the Vehicle — Everything Else Is Secondary

Your vehicle is your base camp, your shelter in a pinch, and your lifeline. Getting this wrong makes every other piece of gear irrelevant. You don’t need a $90,000 Land Cruiser to start overlanding. You need something reliable, with decent ground clearance, and ideally four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with low range.

The Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota Tacoma are the most common platforms for good reason — parts are everywhere, the communities are massive, and they’re proven in rough terrain. A stock 4Runner with an honest driver will go places that embarrass heavily modified rigs with inexperienced pilots. I’ve watched this play out on the Rubicon Trail more times than I can count.

Before you spend a dollar on gear, do this: change your fluids, check your brakes, inspect your tires, and confirm your spare is full-size and in good shape. A worn-out vehicle with a roof tent and a $400 recovery kit is a liability. A well-maintained stock truck with basic recovery gear is an asset.

Tires: The Single Most Important Upgrade

If you’re going to spend money on your vehicle first, spend it on tires. All-terrain tires like the BF Goodrich KO2 or Falken Wildpeak AT3W will transform a stock truck’s capability on dirt, gravel, and light mud. The KO2 in a 265/70R17 weighs about 50 lbs and carries a 3,640 lb load rating — it’s the tire I’ve run more miles on than anything else.

Skip mud-terrain tires as a beginner. They’re loud on pavement, wear faster, and aren’t actually better than a good all-terrain in most overland conditions. Save the aggressive tread for when you know exactly what terrain you’re targeting.

Recovery Gear: Non-Negotiable Before You Leave Pavement

Getting stuck is a when, not an if. The question is whether you’re prepared to get yourself out or whether you’re calling for a rescue. Every overlander needs a core recovery kit before driving on unpaved roads in remote areas.

Here’s the minimum kit:

  • Traction boards: MAXTRAX MKII or the more budget-friendly TRED Pro. These go under your tires when you’re high-centered or spinning in mud or sand. I’ve used traction boards to self-recover more times than I’ve used a winch.
  • Kinetic recovery rope: Not a tow strap. A kinetic rope like the Bubba Rope 3/4″ stores energy and snaps a stuck vehicle free without shock-loading the recovery points. Breaking strength on the 3/4″ is 19,000 lbs — more than enough for most rigs.
  • Recovery shackles: Soft shackles (Dyneema) or rated D-ring shackles. Never use hardware store shackles for vehicle recovery.
  • Hi-Lift Jack: The Hi-Lift 48″ cast iron jack lifts, pulls, and spreads. Learn to use it before you need it — it’s also one of the most dangerous tools in your kit if you don’t know what you’re doing.
  • Shovel: A full-size folding shovel, not a camping trowel. The Gerber E-Tool is compact and tough enough for serious digging.

A winch is great but it’s not a beginner priority. You need an anchor point to winch from, which means another vehicle or a deadman anchor — complexity you don’t need to add on day one. Master traction boards and kinetic rope recovery first.

Navigation: Don’t Trust Your Phone

Cell service disappears fast once you’re on forest roads and two-tracks. I’ve watched people drive confidently into dead-end canyons because Google Maps told them to. Out there, Google Maps is useless — it doesn’t know the road washed out in 2019 or that the “road” it’s routing you on is a seasonal ATV trail.

You need two things: a dedicated GPS device loaded with offline maps, and paper topo maps for your specific area.

The Garmin GPSMAP 67 is what I run. It’s got a 3-inch display, 16-hour battery life, and accepts BirdsEye satellite imagery. Pair it with onX Offroad on your phone as a backup — onX has the best trail data I’ve found, including gate status, road conditions, and land ownership overlays. The app works offline when you download maps in advance, but your phone battery will die before your Garmin does.

For paper maps, CalTopo lets you print custom topo maps at whatever scale you need. Print them, laminate them, keep them in your rig. This sounds old-fashioned until you’re sitting in a canyon with a dead phone and a Garmin that just took a rock to the screen.

Communication: How to Call for Help When There’s No Signal

A satellite communicator isn’t optional on remote routes. The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is the one I carry — it weighs 3.5 oz, sends two-way messages via the Iridium satellite network, and has an SOS function that connects you to a 24/7 emergency response center. Plans start around $15/month for basic messaging.

The SPOT Gen4 runs about $150 and gets you in the door, but it’s one-way only — you can send an SOS and pre-set messages, but you can’t receive responses. For solo travel, spend the extra money on the inReach. Two-way communication has gotten me out of one genuinely bad situation in the Escalante that a one-way device wouldn’t have resolved.

A CB radio is worth having for communicating with other vehicles in your group and with truckers on forest roads. The Midland 75-822 is a handheld CB that also works as a mobile unit — about $50 and it’s been reliable across thousands of miles of dirt road travel.

Shelter and Sleep Systems

How you sleep in the field breaks down into three main options: ground tent, rooftop tent (RTT), or sleeping in your vehicle. Each has real costs and real benefits.

Ground Tents

The cheapest and most flexible option. You can camp anywhere, you don’t need a flat parking spot, and setup takes minutes. The MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2-Person tent is what I’d recommend for beginners — 3 lbs 14 oz dry weight, freestanding, and it’s handled everything from desert wind to alpine sleet. It’s a 3-season tent that handles serious weather.

The downside: you’re on the ground, which means moisture, critters, and rocky terrain. In the desert Southwest, ground camping means checking your shoes for scorpions every morning. Not a dealbreaker, just a reality.

Rooftop Tents

RTTs have exploded in popularity — you’re off the ground, setup is fast, and the sleeping platform is flat regardless of what you parked on. The iKamper Skycamp 2.0 is the benchmark hardshell RTT: opens in under a minute, fits two adults comfortably, and carries a 4-season rating. It’s also $3,500, which is why I’m not recommending it to beginners.

If you want to try an RTT without the full commitment, the Smittybilt Overlander Tent runs around $500 and has sold hundreds of thousands of units. It’s a soft-shell, it takes longer to set up than a hardshell, and it’s heavier — but it works and it won’t break your budget before you know if overlanding is your thing.

One honest warning about RTTs: they raise your center of gravity, add significant weight to your roof (the Smittybilt is 118 lbs), and limit where you can drive — low-clearance obstacles that your rig would clear become problems when you’ve got 8 inches of tent sitting on top. Don’t buy an RTT until you’ve done a few trips and know you want to commit.

Water: The System That Keeps You Alive

Water is where beginners consistently underplan. The general rule is one gallon per person per day for drinking and cooking — double that in desert heat. On a four-day trip with two people in summer, that’s 16 gallons minimum before you account for washing and cooking.

Build a dedicated water storage system early. The Scepter 5-Gallon Military Water Cans are the standard — food-grade, stackable, and virtually indestructible. I run four of them, which gives me 20 gallons of dedicated water storage independent of my cooler.

Carry a water filter as a backup. The Sawyer Squeeze or MSR Guardian will let you pull water from streams and springs if you find them. I’ve used a Sawyer Squeeze to refill from a mountain spring in Idaho that I’d have walked past if I wasn’t carrying filtration — turned a water-stressed situation into a non-issue.

Power and Lighting

Your vehicle’s alternator isn’t a reliable power source for running camp electronics overnight. You need a secondary power system if you want to run lights, charge devices, and keep a fridge running without killing your starter battery.

The simplest entry-level setup is a portable power station like the Jackery Explorer 1000. It holds 1,002 Wh, outputs 1,000W continuous, and charges from your vehicle’s 12V outlet while you drive. It’ll run a 12V fridge for about 24 hours, charge phones and laptops, and power LED camp lighting. At around $800 it’s a real investment — but it requires zero electrical work, which matters when you’re just getting started.

If you want a permanent solution, a dual-battery system with a DC-DC charger keeps a dedicated house battery isolated from your starter battery. REDARC and Renogy both make solid units. This is where most serious overlanders end up, but it requires installation and a bigger upfront cost.

For lighting, a quality headlamp and a camp lantern cover most needs. The Black Diamond Spot 400 puts out 400 lumens and runs 200 hours on low — it’s been in my kit for years. For camp, the BioLite SiteLight XL string lights are surprisingly good: 54 LEDs, 500 lumens, USB rechargeable, and they pack down small.

Cooking and Food Systems

Overlanding food is different from backpacking food — you have a vehicle, so you can carry real ingredients and real cookware. Take advantage of it.

A two-burner propane stove like the Camp Chef Explorer is the workhorse of overland cooking. It runs on 1 lb canisters or adapts to a 20 lb tank, outputs 30,000 BTU total, and the cast iron grates handle a Dutch oven without complaint. I’ve cooked full meals for six people on this stove at a trailhead in the Wind Rivers.

For food storage, a 12V compressor fridge beats a cooler on any trip longer than two days. The Dometic CFX3 35 holds 36 liters, runs at -7°F to 50°F, and draws about 1 amp per hour at 32°F — manageable with even a modest power setup. It’s $600, and it’s worth every dollar on extended trips. Ice is heavy, it melts, and you can’t keep meat reliably cold in a cooler for five days in July.

First Aid and Emergency Preparedness

A basic first aid kit isn’t enough for remote travel. You need a kit built for wilderness scenarios where evacuation could be hours or days away. I took my first WFA course in 2008 and I’ve used that training in the field more times than I’ve used my winch.

The Phased Approach: How to Build Your Kit Without Going Broke

The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to buy everything at once. They spend $15,000 on gear before they’ve spent 15 nights in the field, and half of it turns out to be wrong for how they actually travel. Build in phases.

Phase 1: First Trip Ready ($500–$1,000)

  • Traction boards (MAXTRAX or TRED Pro): ~$250
  • Kinetic recovery rope: ~$80
  • Recovery shackles: ~$40
  • Satellite communicator (inReach Mini 2): ~$350 + subscription
  • Paper maps and onX Offroad subscription: ~$30/year
  • Water cans (4x Scepter 5-gallon): ~$120
  • Basic first aid kit: ~$80

This gets you on the road safely. You’re using your existing tent and sleeping bag, cooking on a camp stove you probably already own, and keeping it simple. Do five or six trips on this setup before you spend another dollar on gear.

Phase 2: Extended Capability ($1,500–$3,000)

  • 12V compressor fridge (Dometic CFX3 35): ~$600
  • Portable power station (Jackery 1000): ~$800
  • Dedicated GPS device (Garmin GPSMAP 67): ~$400
  • Hi-Lift 48″ jack: ~$120
  • Upgraded tires (BFG KO2 set): ~$800–$1,200 installed

Phase 3: Serious Setup ($3,000+)

  • Rooftop tent or vehicle sleeping platform
  • Dual battery system with DC-DC charger
  • Winch with synthetic rope
  • Roof rack or bed rack system
  • Suspension lift (if terrain demands it)

By the time you’re spending Phase 3 money, you’ll know exactly what you need because you’ll have felt the gaps in your setup on real trips. No gear review will teach you that.

Skills You Need Before You Go Remote

Gear without skills is just expensive ballast. Practice these before you’re in a situation where it matters:

  • Tire changing: Change your tire on a slope, in the dark, in the rain. If you can’t do it in 20 minutes under those conditions, practice more.
  • Reading terrain: Learn to identify soft sand, hidden rocks, and side-slope hazards before you’re in them. Drive slowly and look ahead, not at the ground directly in front of your bumper.
  • Traction board deployment: Practice getting your traction boards under your tires before you’re stuck and panicking. It’s harder than it looks when you’re high-centered in mud.
  • Air-down technique: Airing down to 18–22 PSI dramatically improves traction on soft terrain and rocks. Carry a quality gauge (the Longacre Racing gauge is accurate to 0.5 PSI) and a compressor to air back up before returning to pavement.
  • Trip planning: File a trip plan with someone who isn’t going. Tell them your route, your campsites, and when to call for help if they don’t hear from you. This costs nothing and has saved lives.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Overloading the roof. Every pound on your roof raises your center of gravity and increases rollover risk. The math is unforgiving on side slopes. Keep your roof load under your vehicle manufacturer’s dynamic roof load rating — usually 150–165 lbs for most trucks and SUVs.

Going alone before you’re ready. Solo overlanding is great — I do it regularly — but not until you’ve got solid recovery skills and reliable communication. Your first several trips should be with at least one other vehicle.

Trusting online trail reports without checking dates. A trail report from June 2021 tells you nothing about current conditions. Call the local ranger district. They’ll tell you in five minutes what three hours of internet research won’t.

Skipping the pre-trip vehicle inspection. Check your fluids, tire pressure, lug nuts, and spare before every trip. I do a 15-point inspection the night before any trip longer than a day. It takes 20 minutes and it’s caught two slow leaks and a loose wheel bearing over the years.

Buying a lift before you can drive stock. A lift doesn’t make you a better driver. It makes your rig taller and more expensive to recover when you make a beginner mistake. Learn your vehicle’s stock limits first.

Where to Start: Routes for Beginners

Pick routes that match your current skill level, not your aspirations. The Mojave Road in California is 140 miles of mostly easy desert two-track — a great first overland route that teaches desert travel without serious technical challenges. The Lonesome Highway in Montana is another accessible option with good scenery and low-consequence terrain.

Save the Rubicon Trail, the Ouray area in Colorado, and the Dalton Highway in Alaska for when you’ve got real miles under your belt. Those routes will still be there when you’re ready. Getting in over your head on technical terrain before you’re prepared doesn’t build experience — it builds a story someone else tells about having to rescue you.

Start close to home. Run easy routes until they feel boring. Then step up. The remote stuff gets better the more prepared you are to actually pay attention to it instead of white-knuckling through it.
