Hunting Scope Sizes Explained: Magnification & Objective Diameter Guide

That number stamped on your scope tube — 3-9×40, 4-12×50, whatever — isn’t marketing fluff. It tells you exactly what that optic can and can’t do before you mount it on a rifle. Learn to read it and you’ll stop buying scopes that don’t match your terrain.

Breaking Down the Notation

Take 3-9×40. The first two numbers are magnification range — this scope zooms from 3x to 9x. The number after the “x” is objective lens diameter in millimeters — 40mm here. That’s the whole notation.

A fixed 4×32 has no zoom range. Locked at 4x, 32mm objective. Simple, durable, and underrated for brush hunting where you’re not making 400-yard shots anyway.

Why Objective Diameter Matters More Than Most Hunters Think

Objective diameter controls how much light hits your reticle. Bigger lens, more light, brighter image — especially at dawn and dusk when deer actually move. But bigger objectives mean more weight, taller rings, and a scope that sits higher on your rifle.

I ran a Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16×50 on a Montana elk hunt three seasons back specifically because we were glassing timber edges at last light. That 50mm objective pulled in enough light to make an ethical shot call at 6:40 PM, when my buddy’s 40mm scope on the same cartridge was already going gray.

Exit Pupil: The Math That Actually Predicts Brightness

Here’s the calculation nobody explains at the counter: divide objective diameter by magnification to get exit pupil in millimeters. A 3-9×40 at 9x gives you a 4.4mm exit pupil (40÷9). At 3x, that same scope delivers 13.3mm — more than your eye can even use.

Your pupil dilates to about 5-7mm in low light. Drop exit pupil below 3mm and the image dims noticeably — that’s your eye doing the limiting, not the glass. Crank a 4-12×40 to full 12x at last light and it looks murky. Exit pupil there is just 3.3mm. Back it to 8x and you’re at 5mm, noticeably brighter through the exact same lens.

Field of View Shrinks as Magnification Climbs

Field of view is the width of your visible image at 100 yards, in feet. A 3-9×40 gives roughly 39 feet at 3x and just 13 feet at 9x. That matters more when you’re tracking a moving animal through brush — too much zoom and it walks right out of frame.

For running shots on hogs or coyotes, I keep magnification low on purpose. You can always dial up. You can’t un-lose an animal that left your field of view.

Matching Scope to Rifle and Terrain

Hunters overspend or underbuy right here. Match the scope to what you’re actually hunting, not what looks impressive on a shelf.

Whitetail in Timber, Under 150 Yards

A 3-9×40 is still the gold standard, and it’s not close. Light, low mounting height, plenty of brightness at dawn and dusk, enough zoom for any ethical whitetail shot in eastern hardwoods. I’ve put more rounds through variations of this setup than any other scope class — it’s the Toyota Camry of optics. Boring. Reliable. Does the job every time.

Open Country / Western Mule Deer, 150-400 Yards

Step up to a 4-12×50 or 3-9×50. You need the reach and the light-gathering for glassing distant ridgelines. The extra objective diameter earns its weight penalty out here.

Elk in Timber and Meadow Transitions

Tough terrain for optic choice. You’re bouncing between close timber shots and 300-yard meadow shots in the same hunt. A 2-10×42 or 3-9×40 handles both without forcing a choice.

A 4-12×50 or 6-24×50 earns its keep here. Targets are often stationary in daylight, so exit pupil at max zoom matters less. Precision at distance is the priority.

  • 3-9×40 — Best all-around whitetail/deer scope. Light, bright enough for dawn/dusk, low mounting height. 250 yards and under.
  • 4-12×50 — Open country deer, elk, western terrain. Heavier, needs higher rings, excellent light gathering at moderate-high zoom. Up to 400 yards.
  • 3-9×50 — Underrated hybrid. Same zoom range as the classic 3-9×40 but with dramatically better low-light exit pupil (5.5mm at 9x vs. 4.4mm).

  • 6-24×50 — Long-range varmint and target shooting. Daylight use mostly — exit pupil gets too small for dusk hunting at high zoom.

The Ring Height Problem Nobody Warns You About

Bigger objective lenses need taller rings to clear the barrel. That raises your cheek weld off the stock and throws off natural point of aim if you’re not paying attention. A 50mm objective on a standard bolt gun often needs medium or high rings — check your barrel contour and objective bell clearance before ordering rings separately from the scope.

My Actual Recommendation

Hunt one rifle for whitetail in mixed terrain and you’re not chasing 400-yard shots? Buy a 3-9×40 and stop overthinking it. It’s the most proven, most versatile configuration in hunting optics because decades of hunters have already run this math in the field.

Hunt open country or glass a lot before the shot? Spend the extra weight and money on a 4-12×50 or 3-9×50. The brightness difference at last light isn’t subtle — I’ve watched it decide shot/no-shot calls on multiple hunts.

Match the scope to your terrain and typical shot distance, not the biggest number on the box.
