How to Find Fish in a New Lake: The Reed Callaway Method

Find fish in a new lake by working the map before you ever launch, then spending your first hour on the water confirming what that map told you instead of blind-casting for structure you haven’t located yet. I’ve fished lakes from the Ozarks to the Adirondacks, and the guys who catch fish on strange water aren’t lucky. They’re systematic.

Most anglers show up to unfamiliar water and start casting at whatever looks fishy. That’s a coin flip. After twenty years of guiding people onto lakes I’d never seen before that morning, the difference between a five-fish day and a skunk usually comes down to what you did before your line hit the water.

Start With the Map Before You Ever Launch

I do this the night before, every time, no exceptions. Pull up a topographic map of the lake. Navionics, Garmin Quickdraw, or even the paper contour maps from Fishing Hot Spots all work. Look for three things: depth changes, creek channels, and points.

Creek channels are the highways fish use to move from deep water to shallow feeding areas. Find where an old creek bed winds through the lake basin, and you’ve found a travel corridor that gets used every single day, regardless of season. Points where that channel swings close to a hard bank or a hump are where fish stack up before feeding.

I mark three or four spots on the map before I ever back the trailer down the ramp. I’m not certain fish will be there. I’m building a testable plan instead of a random one.

Structure Is Everything: What to Look For

Structure is anything that breaks up an otherwise featureless bottom or shoreline. Fish relate to structure because it gives them ambush points, current breaks, and temperature refuge. On a new lake, I’m hunting for four structure types in this order:

  • Points and humps. Underwater or shoreline points that extend into deeper water. These are the first places I fish on any new lake because they concentrate baitfish and give predators a funnel to work.
  • Timber and brush piles. Standing timber in reservoirs, laydowns along natural lake shorelines. Bass, crappie, and walleye all use wood as ambush cover.
  • Rock transitions. Where gravel meets chunk rock, or rock meets clay. These transition zones hold crayfish, and crayfish hold smallmouth and largemouth.
  • Weed edges. The outside edge of a weed line, not the middle of the weed bed. Fish sit on the edge and dart in and out to feed.

Every one of these shows up on a good topo map as a subtle clue: a tight contour line, a shaded depth change, a marked hazard. Learning to read those clues before you launch cuts your search time on the water by half, easy.

Seasonal Patterns Change Where Fish Sit

The same lake fishes completely differently in April than it does in August. Ignore that and your structure list is only half useful. Here’s how I adjust by season:

Spring (Pre-Spawn and Spawn)

Fish move shallow. I’m targeting the first hard structure adjacent to spawning flats: a rock point next to a pea-gravel bay, a stump field near a shallow cove with a north-facing bank that warms first in the sun. Water temp matters more than anything else this time of year. I carry a cheap stick thermometer and take readings at three depths before committing to a spot.

Summer

Fish push deeper and relate to thermocline depth. This is where your electronics earn their keep. You’re looking for that band of suspended baitfish and marks holding just above or below it. Points that drop into 20-30 feet of water become your bread and butter. I spend twice as long idling with my fishfinder in summer as I do in spring.

Fall

Baitfish push into creek arms chasing cooling surface temps, and predators follow. This is when those creek channels I marked on the map the night before really produce. I’ve had October afternoons on Norfork Lake where every stop on a channel swing produced a fish within five casts.

Winter

Fish hold deep and tight to the steepest structure you can find: bluff walls, river channel drop-offs, deep brush piles. A slow presentation on the right structure beats fast coverage of the wrong structure every time in cold water.

The First Hour on the Water: My Systematic Drift

Here’s exactly what I do the moment I launch on water I’ve never fished:

Step one: I idle to my first marked waypoint at no-wake speed with my fishfinder running in traditional sonar mode. I’m not fishing yet. I’m confirming the structure exists and checking for baitfish or fish marks.

Step two: If I see baitfish balls or arcs holding near structure, I drop a marker buoy right on top of it. This sounds old-school, but it works better than any waypoint because you can see it from every angle as you work the area. I keep a set of Frabill marker buoys in my console at all times.

Step three: I make ten casts, minimum, from at least three different angles before I decide a spot isn’t holding fish. One pass through structure tells you almost nothing. Fish position relative to current, sun angle, and depth changes throughout the day.

Step four: If ten casts from three angles produce nothing, I move to my next marked spot. I don’t get married to water that isn’t producing just because the map said it should.

Reading Your Electronics Like a Field Journal

A fishfinder isn’t just for locating fish, it’s for building a mental map of the lake in real time. I watch bottom hardness readings to identify rock-to-clay transitions. I watch for baitfish clouds because food dictates fish location more than any other single factor.

Side-imaging technology changed how fast I can scout new water. I can idle down a shoreline at 3-4 mph and see brush piles, stumps, and rock piles thirty yards off to either side without ever making a cast. That’s scouting time I used to spend blind-casting, now compressed into twenty minutes.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to a unit with side-imaging, a basic down-imaging model still tells you plenty. Use it before you fish, not just while you fish.

Polarized Glasses Are Non-Negotiable

On clear lakes and reservoirs, a good pair of polarized sunglasses lets you sight structure your electronics can miss entirely: a shallow rock pile, a stump field in six feet of water, the edge of a grass line. I’ve spotted more shallow structure with my eyes than with sonar on gin-clear lakes in the Ozarks.

Observation Beats Random Casting Every Time

The biggest mistake anglers make on new water is treating it like a casting contest instead of a puzzle. Slow down. Watch for surface activity: shad flipping, birds diving, subtle rings from feeding fish. Watch your electronics on the way to every spot, not just at the spot itself. Half the fish I catch on new lakes come from structure I noticed by accident while running to a waypoint I’d marked the night before.

I’ve watched clients blow through six spots in twenty minutes, convinced the next one has to be better. Meanwhile the angler working one good point methodically, from three angles, with a rod actually capable of feeling bottom composition (a St. Croix Triumph does this well for under $100) outfishes them two to one.

The Reed Callaway Framework: Quick Reference

  • Study topo maps the night before. Mark 3-4 high-probability spots based on creek channels, points, and depth transitions.
  • Adjust structure targets to the season: shallow in spring, thermocline-adjacent in summer, creek arms in fall, steep structure in winter.
  • Idle to each waypoint at no-wake speed, confirm structure and baitfish with electronics before making a cast.
  • Mark productive water with a buoy, then fish it from at least three angles with ten casts minimum before moving on.
  • Trust the process over any single spot. Move on when a marked location doesn’t produce, and keep working your list.

I’ve run this same approach on lakes I’d fished a hundred times and lakes I’d never seen before that morning, and it produces fish both ways. The map gets you close. The electronics confirm it. Multiple angles and enough casts close the deal.

Work the lake like a checklist, not a guessing game, and the fish show up right where the contour lines said they would.
