How to Catch Striped Bass in Lakes: Depth, Structure, and Timing
Reservoir stripers live and die by three things: thermocline depth, baitfish location, and structure that breaks current or wind. Find where those three overlap and you’ve found your fish. I’ve spent the better part of two decades chasing linesides on lakes from Lake Texoma to Lanier. The pattern never really changes. Only the depth does.
Lake stripers aren’t like their coastal cousins. They’re landlocked, they school hard, and they push baitfish into open water instead of pinning them against a shoreline. That means you’re fishing suspended fish in 20 to 60 feet of water more often than not, and your electronics matter as much as your rod.
Understanding the Thermocline (And Why It’s Everything)
The thermocline is the layer where warm surface water meets the cold, oxygen-poor water below. Stripers need both cool water and dissolved oxygen to survive summer heat, so they stack up right at the top edge of that thermocline, usually somewhere between 20 and 35 feet on most southern reservoirs by mid-July.

Reading Structure: Where Stripers Actually Hold
Stripers relate to structure differently than largemouth. They’re not tucking into brush piles. They’re using structure to ambush baitfish in open water. On every reservoir I’ve fished, four structure types produce over and over.
Humps and Submerged Islands
Isolated humps that top out 15-20 feet below the surface and drop into 40-60 feet of water are striper magnets, especially in summer and fall. Baitfish get pushed up and over these humps by current or wind, and stripers sit on the down-current side waiting to ambush.
I’ve had my best mid-day summer bites on humps at Lake Texoma sitting in 30 feet of water with the top of the structure at 18 feet. Fish suspend just off the break, not necessarily on top.
Old River Channels
Every reservoir was a river before it was a lake. That original channel is still down there, and stripers use the channel edges as highways. In winter especially, fish stack in the channel bends where deep water swings close to a point or flat.
Pull up a lake map with contour lines. Most state wildlife agencies publish these free. Trace the original river course. Where that channel makes a sharp bend near a point, that’s where you park the boat.
Main Lake Points and Bluff Walls
Rocky main-lake points that drop fast into deep water hold fish in spring and fall when stripers push baitfish shallow. Bluff walls work the same way, especially on windy days when current gets pushed against the rock and disorients shad.
Bridge Riprap and Causeways
Don’t overlook man-made structure. Bridge pilings and riprap causeways create current breaks in lakes that otherwise have none, and baitfish stack up against them. This is especially true after a heavy rain event when generation or inflow creates current through a lake that’s normally still.
Seasonal Movement: Where to Find Fish Month to Month
Reservoir stripers make predictable seasonal moves tied to water temperature and baitfish location. Learn this pattern on your home lake and you’ll cut your search time in half.
Spring (March-May): Shallow and Aggressive
As water warms into the mid-50s, stripers push baitfish onto main-lake flats and up major tributary arms. This is topwater season. Some of the best surface bites I’ve had all year happen in April when stripers are busting shad on top at dawn.

Summer (June-August): Deep and Structure-Bound
This is thermocline season. Fish lock onto humps, channel bends, and bluff walls at consistent depth. Live bait, gizzard shad or threadfin shad on a downline, outproduces artificials by a wide margin once water surface temps push past 80°F.

Fall (September-November): The Feeding Frenzy
As surface water cools and the thermocline breaks down, stripers go on a feeding binge before winter. This is the most exciting time to target them in lakes. You’ll see fish blowing up on shad on top, sometimes over open water with no structure in sight.
Keep a topwater or a swimbait rigged and ready at all times in October and November. When you see gulls diving or shad skipping on the surface, that’s stripers pushing bait up from below. Get a cast in fast. These blowups can last 30 seconds or 10 minutes, no predicting it.
Winter (December-February): Deep and Sluggish
Cold water pushes stripers deep onto river channel bends and bluff ends, often suspending 40-60 feet down over 70-100 feet of water. Bite windows shrink, but fish bunch up tight, so once you find them, you can often load the boat.
Slow-trolled live bait or vertical jigging with a heavy spoon produces best. I’ve had good luck jigging a Hopkins Shorty Spoon directly under suspended schools marked on sonar. Drop it to the depth you mark fish, then work it with short hops.

Rigging for Reservoir Stripers
Downline rigs are the bread-and-butter presentation for suspended lake stripers. Here’s the setup I run on every summer trip:
- Medium-heavy 7-foot rod, conventional reel spooled with 20-30lb monofilament
- 3-way swivel with a 2-4oz egg sinker on a short dropper
- 4-6 feet of 15-17lb fluorocarbon leader to a 2/0 circle hook
- Live gizzard or threadfin shad hooked through the nose or back
Circle hooks matter here. Stripers inhale bait and swim off. Set the hook too fast on a J-hook rig and you’ll pull it out of their mouth half the time. Let a circle hook do its job. Reel down, apply steady pressure, and the hook finds the corner of the jaw on its own almost every time.
Common Mistakes That Cost You Fish
After guiding dozens of striper trips on reservoirs, the same mistakes show up again and again:
- Fishing too shallow in summer: If your bait’s not near the thermocline depth, you’re wasting time. Check your electronics before you drop a single line.
- Ignoring wind direction: Wind pushes baitfish and creates current on otherwise still lakes. Fish the wind-blown side of points and humps.
- Using line too light: Reservoir stripers run 15-30 pounds regularly on lakes like Texoma and Lanier. Undergunned tackle means long fights and lost fish at the boat.
- Not covering enough water: Stripers are nomadic in lakes. If you’re not marking fish after 20 minutes on a spot, move. Don’t wait them out.
