The best marine battery for your trolling motor is a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) unit like the Battle Born 100Ah, full stop. If lithium’s outside your budget, a dedicated deep-cycle AGM like the Optima BlueTop D34M will still get you through a solid day on the water. Skip everything else. Cheap flooded lead-acid and starting batteries repurposed for trolling duty are compromises you’ll pay for in dead runtime halfway across the lake.

I’ve burned through six batteries in eight years running a Minn Kota Terrova on my jon boat, mostly because I didn’t know what I was buying the first few times. Here’s what actually matters.

Why Battery Type Matters More Than Brand

Trolling motors are amp hogs. A 24-volt system pulling 40 amps at half throttle will drain a mediocre battery in under two hours. The chemistry inside that battery, not the sticker on the outside, determines whether you’re still moving at 4 PM or paddling back with your arms.

There are three chemistries worth considering in 2024: flooded lead-acid, AGM (absorbed glass mat), and lithium iron phosphate. I’ve run all three hard enough to kill them.

Flooded Lead-Acid

Cheapest option, and that’s about the only thing going for it. You’ll get 200-300 cycles before capacity craters, they hate deep discharges below 50%, and you’ve got to keep them upright and check water levels. I ran a pair of these on a used pontoon for one season. By August they were holding maybe 60% of rated capacity. Fine for occasional weekend use on a tight budget. Not fine if you’re on the water every week.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat)

This is the sweet spot for most anglers who aren’t ready to go lithium. AGM batteries are sealed, spill-proof, handle deeper discharges without the same degradation curve as flooded lead-acid, and they don’t off-gas hydrogen the way flooded batteries do. That matters if your battery box sits anywhere near an ignition source.

The Optima BlueTop D34M is the one I recommend most. It’s a dual-purpose battery (starting and deep cycle), which means it’s not the absolute best pure deep-cycle option, but it’s tough, vibration-resistant, and I’ve had one running a 30-lb thrust Minn Kota Endura for three seasons on Lake Texoma without a hiccup. Reserve capacity sits around 120 minutes at 25 amps, enough for a solid half-day of moderate trolling.

For a true deep-cycle AGM built specifically for trolling loads, look at the VMAX MR137. It’s a 100Ah battery with a thicker plate design meant for repeated deep discharges, not starting duty. I ran this side-by-side against a flooded battery of the same rating last spring on the Buffalo River, and the VMAX still had usable voltage after six hours of continuous trolling at speed 3. The flooded battery tapped out around hour four.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

Lithium is the chemistry that made the other two obsolete for anyone serious about time on the water. LiFePO4 batteries deliver 2,000-5,000 charge cycles compared to 300-500 for AGM, they weigh roughly half what a comparable lead-acid battery weighs, and they maintain consistent voltage output across the entire discharge curve instead of sagging as they drain.

That last point is the one anglers underestimate. Your trolling motor doesn’t just run longer on lithium, it runs at consistent thrust the whole time. With AGM or flooded batteries, you’ll notice your Minn Kota or MotorGuide losing punch as the charge drops below 50%. Lithium holds close to full voltage until it’s nearly empty, then drops off fast. You get more usable power, not just more total capacity.

The Battle Born 100Ah is the one I run now on my primary rig, and it’s not close. Dry weight is 31 lbs versus 63 lbs for a comparable AGM. I’ve got over 400 hours on mine across two seasons on a 55-lb thrust Minn Kota Terrova, and I haven’t seen meaningful capacity loss. Built-in battery management system protects against overcharge, over-discharge, and short circuits, something you don’t get with lead-acid.

Yes, it costs roughly 3-4x what the Optima runs. But if you’re putting 40+ days a year on the water, the math works out. A LiFePO4 battery that lasts 8-10 years costs less per year than replacing an AGM every 2-3 seasons.

Matching Battery to Motor: Amp Hours and Voltage

Don’t just grab the biggest battery on the shelf. Match capacity to your motor’s draw and your typical trip length.

  • Small trolling motors (30-40 lb thrust, 12V): A single 100Ah battery like the VMAX MR137 or Battle Born 100Ah will comfortably run 6-8 hours at moderate speed.
  • Mid-size motors (50-55 lb thrust, 12V or 24V): You’ll want 100Ah minimum per 12V battery in the system. Two Battle Born 100Ah units wired in series for 24V gives you serious runtime margin.
  • Large motors (70-80+ lb thrust, 24V or 36V): This is where lithium’s weight savings really pay off. Running three or four AGM batteries for a 36V system adds 150+ lbs to your boat. The equivalent lithium bank saves you close to half that.

Amp hour rating tells you capacity, but pull the actual amp draw off your motor’s spec plate at your typical running speed and do the math. A 55-lb thrust motor pulling 30 amps at speed 3 will drain a 100Ah battery (usable capacity, accounting for depth of discharge limits) in roughly 3-4 hours on AGM, 6-7 hours on lithium since you can safely discharge it deeper.

The Charging Piece Nobody Talks About

A great battery paired with the wrong charger will shorten its life fast. Lithium batteries need a charger with a LiFePO4-specific profile. Using a standard lead-acid charger on a lithium battery won’t damage it outright, but it won’t hit full capacity and it won’t balance the cells properly either.

Skip flooded lead-acid entirely unless you’re running a backup boat you use twice a year.

Get the combination right: right battery, right charger. That’s the difference between running your lines until sundown and paddling home early.
