Overlanding Gear Checklist: Recovery, Safety, and Comfort by Trip Length

Pack wrong and you’re either stranded on a forest road at midnight or hauling 200 pounds of gear you never touched. Here’s what goes in the rig — and what stays home — based on trip length, season, and terrain.

I’ve been running overlanding routes since before the word “overlanding” was plastered on every lifted Tacoma in the trailhead parking lot. The Buffalo River corridor, the Extraterrestrial Highway, the Lonesome Highway through central Oregon — I’ve put gear through all of it. What follows is what actually works.

Recovery Gear: The Non-Negotiables

Recovery gear isn’t optional. It’s the difference between a story you tell at the campfire and a $400 tow bill — or a night in a ditch with no cell service. Every overland rig needs a baseline recovery kit regardless of trip length.

Traction Boards

MAXTRAX MKII boards are the standard at 10.8 lbs per pair. I’ve pulled my 4Runner out of soft sand in the Mojave and axle-deep mud in the Cascades with these. Each board has 58 teeth — that’s why they grip where cheaper boards spin out and crack under load.

If the $289/pair price stings, the TRED Pro boards are a legitimate step-down at around $180. Slightly less aggressive tread pattern, but I’ve run them on three Pacific Northwest trips without a failure. Skip the $40 Amazon knockoffs — they’ll snap under a loaded rig.

Kinetic Recovery Rope vs. Snatch Strap

A kinetic recovery rope stores energy like a spring — it stretches 20-30% under load and uses that rebound to pull a stuck vehicle free. A snatch strap is static and transfers shock load directly to both vehicles. For overlanding, kinetic rope wins. The Bubba Rope 3/4″ x 30′ has a 28,600 lb breaking strength and weighs 7.5 lbs — it fits in a stuff sack and lives behind the rear seat.

Pair it with recovery shackles rated to at least 4.75 tons. The Rhino USA D-Ring Shackles hit 41,850 lbs breaking strength and run about $30 for a two-pack. Don’t cheap out here.

Hi-Lift Jack

The Hi-Lift Jack 60″ All-Cast model weighs 28 lbs and lifts to 7,000 lbs. Mount it on an exterior rack — it’s too long for most interior storage and you don’t want it loose in the cargo area during a hard stop. Add a Hi-Lift Jack Off-Road Base ($35) so it doesn’t sink into soft ground the moment you put weight on it.

Shovel and Tow Points

A full-size pointed shovel — not a folding camp shovel — is what you want for digging out a buried axle. The Fiskars 46″ Steel D-Handle Square Spade is $35 and has survived more dig-outs than I can count. Mount it externally. Tow points should be factory or aftermarket rated — never hook a recovery rope to a trailer hitch ball. People have died doing exactly that.

Navigation: Don’t Trust One System

Cell service disappears fast once you’re 10 miles off pavement. Your navigation stack needs at least two independent systems with no shared point of failure.

Dedicated GPS Unit

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 does double duty — satellite communicator and GPS tracker with two-way messaging via the Iridium network. 100% global coverage. Battery runs 14 days on 10-minute tracking intervals. At $350 it’s not cheap, but it’s the single most important piece of safety tech in my kit.

For in-vehicle navigation, the Garmin Overlander is purpose-built for off-road routing. It runs BirdsEye satellite imagery and preloaded topo maps, has a 7″ display readable in direct sunlight, and mounts to your dash without blocking sight lines. I’ve used it on routes where my phone showed nothing but a blue dot in a gray void.

Paper Maps and Compass

Electronics fail — screens crack, batteries die, firmware corrupts. National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps cover most major overlanding corridors and are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant paper. A baseplate compass like the Suunto A-10 ($25) and 30 minutes learning to shoot a bearing is insurance that weighs 2 oz. Carry both.

Offline Maps on Your Phone

Download your route in onX Offroad before you leave. The app stores full-resolution satellite imagery and road data offline. It’s $30/year and I run it as my third navigation layer on every trip. It’s also how I’ve found dispersed camping spots that don’t appear in any published source.

Shelter: Match the System to the Trip

Trip length and season drive your shelter decision more than any other category. A weekend run doesn’t need the same setup as a 14-day route through the Southwest.

Rooftop Tent vs. Ground Tent

Rooftop tents deploy fast — most under 60 seconds — and keep you off wet, rocky, or uneven ground. The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 fits four people, carries a 3-season rating, and weighs 132 lbs. That’s real weight on your roof and it affects handling on technical terrain. Expect 1-2 mpg fuel economy loss with an RTT mounted.

For solo or two-person trips under a week, a quality ground tent is lighter, cheaper, and doesn’t compromise your vehicle dynamics. The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 weighs 2 lbs 11 oz, sets up in under 5 minutes, and handles 3-season conditions without complaint. I’ve used it in 35 mph wind gusts in Wyoming without a single pole flex that worried me.

Sleep System

Match your bag to your coldest expected overnight temp, then subtract 10°F as a buffer. A 20°F bag for a trip where lows hit 35°F is the right call — you can always vent it. The Kelty Cosmic 20 Down weighs 2 lbs 3 oz, packs to the size of a Nalgene, and runs $130. Best value 3-season bag I’ve tested at this price point.

For winter overlanding in the Rockies or high desert, step up to the Western Mountaineering Alpinlite 15°F. It’s $475 — 850-fill goose down, 1 lb 13 oz dry weight — and it’s kept me comfortable at 8,000 feet in November. Worth every dollar.

Water: Capacity, Filtration, and Redundancy

Water is where people underplan more than any other category. My rule: 1 gallon per person per day for drinking and cooking, plus a 50% buffer on trips over three days. That math adds up fast.

Water Storage

The Scepter 5-gallon military water can is the standard — BPA-free, stackable, and the spigot design doesn’t leak. At $35 each, run two or three depending on trip length. They fit cleanly in most cargo areas and don’t shift under load the way flexible bladders do.

For longer trips or base camping, the Aqua-Tainer 7-gallon jug ($20) holds more volume per dollar but it’s less durable than the Scepter. Use it as a camp water station, not a driving container.

Filtration

Never rely solely on stored water. The Sawyer Squeeze Filter weighs 3 oz, filters 100,000 gallons before replacement, and removes 99.99999% of bacteria and protozoa. It’s $35 and lives in my kit permanently. For vehicle-based overlanding near streams or lakes, the MSR Guardian Purifier ($350) is faster and handles viruses too — worth it for international travel or anywhere with questionable water sources.

Power and Electronics

Modern overlanding rigs pull real draw — fridge, lights, phone charging, GPS, communication devices. Your power system needs to match your consumption or you’ll wake up to a dead house battery on day two.

Dual Battery Setup

A dedicated house battery isolated from your starting battery is the baseline. A 100Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery like the Battle Born BB10012 gives you 80-100Ah of usable capacity versus 50% for AGM, weighs 29 lbs, and has a 3,000-5,000 cycle lifespan. Pair it with a Redarc BCDC1225D DC-DC charger to top it off from your alternator while driving.

Solar

A 100W flexible solar panel on the roof adds meaningful charge on full-day trips. The Renogy 100W 12V Monocrystalline panel is $90, runs 21.3% efficiency, and pairs directly with most MPPT charge controllers. At altitude on a clear day, I’ve seen 85-90W actual output — enough to offset a 12V fridge running at 4 amps average.

Portable Power Station

The Jackery Explorer 500 is 518Wh, weighs 13.3 lbs, and handles 110V AC output for charging laptops, running a CPAP, or powering a small fan. It charges from your vehicle’s 12V outlet or solar input. For weekend trips where a full dual-battery install isn’t justified, this is the right call.

Communication and Safety

Cell service is a luxury, not a plan. Your communication strategy has to work in a dead zone.

Satellite Communicator

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 already earned its mention under navigation — it gets a second one here because it’s your emergency SOS trigger. One button press sends your GPS coordinates to a 24/7 search and rescue coordination center via satellite. The $25/month Expedition plan covers unlimited tracking and messaging. That’s cheap for what it covers.

CB Radio and Ham Radio

CB is still the trail communication standard in most overlanding communities — channel 4 is the default off-road channel. The Midland 75-822 is a handheld CB that also mounts in-vehicle, runs $60, and covers the full 40-channel CB band. Not glamorous, but it works when you’re running a convoy or need to flag down a passing truck.

A Technician class ham radio license opens up VHF/UHF repeater networks that extend your range dramatically. The Baofeng UV-5R is $25 and handles both 2m and 70cm bands. The license exam is 35 multiple-choice questions and costs $15. Worth it if you’re running remote routes regularly.

First Aid Kit

Don’t buy a drugstore first aid kit for backcountry use. The Adventure Medical Kits Trauma Pak with QuikClot is built for wilderness emergencies — tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, compression bandage. At $30 it’s the minimum. For multi-day trips, step up to the AMK Mountain Series Comprehensive Kit, which covers wound closure, splinting, blister treatment, and includes a 60-page wilderness medicine guide.

Take a Wilderness First Responder course if you’re running remote routes. Gear doesn’t replace training.

Tools and Vehicle Maintenance

You don’t need a full mechanic’s toolbox. You need the tools to handle the failures most likely to strand you.

The Core Tool Kit

  • Tire repair: A 12V compressor — the ARB Twin is the best on the market at $400, or the Viair 400P at $140 for a capable step-down — plus a plug kit and tire pressure gauge. Carry two full-size spares on technical terrain.
  • Jump starter: The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a 1000A lithium jump starter the size of a paperback book. It’ll jump a dead V8 gas engine and charges via USB-C. $100.
  • Socket set and wrenches: A 3/8″ drive socket set covering 8-22mm metric handles 90% of under-hood work. The Craftsman 83-piece set is $60 with a lifetime warranty on every piece.
  • Wire, zip ties, and duct tape: Electrical tape, 16-gauge wire, a handful of butt connectors, and a zip tie assortment. These fix the weird stuff — a loose ground wire, a broken mount, a flapping heat shield.
  • Spare fluids: 1 quart engine oil, 1 quart transmission fluid, 1 quart differential fluid, and a gallon of coolant. Match your vehicle’s specs exactly.
  • Spare serpentine belt: Specific to your vehicle. A $15 belt has saved me from a 40-mile walk twice.

Cooking and Camp Comfort

Comfort gear is where trip length matters most. A one-night run doesn’t justify a full camp kitchen. A 10-day route does.

Stove System

The MSR WhisperLite Universal is the most field-serviceable stove I’ve used — every component is replaceable with a multi-tool and the included maintenance kit. It runs on white gas, kerosene, or canister fuel. Dry weight is 11.2 oz. I’ve used it in sub-zero temperatures in Montana when canister stoves quit and it didn’t miss a beat.

For base camp cooking where you’re not counting ounces, the Camp Chef Explorer 2-Burner runs on 1-lb propane canisters or a standard 20-lb tank via adapter. 30,000 BTU total output, handles a cast iron skillet without complaint. Right call when you’re cooking for four people over multiple days.

Cooler

The YETI Tundra 45 holds ice for 5+ days in direct sun — I tested this in August in the Sonoran Desert and hit day 5 with ice still present. It’s 26 lbs empty, which is the tradeoff. For a weekend trip, the Igloo BMX 52-quart at $80 holds ice for 3 days and is a legitimate budget option. For trips over a week, a 12V compressor fridge like the BougeRV 30-quart eliminates ice management entirely.

Redundancy Strategy: How to Think About Backups

Redundancy doesn’t mean doubling everything. It means identifying your single points of failure and backing up the ones that will strand or endanger you.

Back these up on every trip: navigation (GPS + paper maps + offline phone app), communication (satellite communicator + CB radio), water filtration (primary filter + chemical tablets), fire starting (lighter + waterproof matches + ferro rod).

Worth backing up on longer trips: power (dual battery + portable power station), shelter (RTT + emergency bivy), first aid (full kit + tourniquet in the cab within reach).

Don’t bother doubling: cooking systems, chairs, most comfort items. If your stove fails, you eat cold food. Uncomfortable, not dangerous.

Seasonal Adjustments

Summer High Desert and Southwest

Water capacity doubles. Carry a minimum of 5 gallons per person for a 3-day trip. Add a quality sun shelter — the Kelty Noah’s Tarp 9×9 weighs 1 lb 6 oz and sets up in 10 minutes. Swap your 20°F sleeping bag for a 40°F bag or a quilt. Add a battery-powered fan to your sleep system — the OPOLAR F501 USB fan runs 40 hours on a power bank and makes 90°F nights survivable.

Fall and Spring in Mountain Terrain

Temperature swings of 50°F between afternoon and 3 AM are normal at elevation. Layer your sleep system — a 20°F bag with a silk liner handles 10°F to 50°F. Add tire chains if you’re running above 6,000 feet in October or April. Traction boards alone won’t get you through 8 inches of wet snow on a forest road.

Winter Overlanding

Winter is a different game entirely. Add a 0°F or colder sleeping bag, a 4-season tent or hard-sided shelter, a propane heater (Mr. Heater Little Buddy with the low-oxygen shutoff), doubled water capacity since containers freeze overnight, and a full set of tire chains. Tell someone your exact route and expected return time. The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is non-negotiable in winter — not a suggestion.

Weight and Volume Trade-offs by Trip Length

Weekend trip (1-2 nights): Focus on recovery gear, navigation, and a lean sleep system. Skip the full camp kitchen, the 7-gallon water jugs, and the generator. Total added gear weight should stay under 80 lbs.

Mid-length trip (3-7 nights): Add the full water storage system, a 12V fridge or quality cooler, expanded tool kit, and a solar charging setup. You’re looking at 150-200 lbs of added gear — know your vehicle’s payload rating and stay under it.

Expedition (8+ nights): Full dual battery system, expanded medical kit, complete spare parts inventory, and enough food and water to be self-sufficient for the full duration. Weight discipline becomes critical. Audit every item before it goes in the rig. If it doesn’t have a specific job, it doesn’t go.

Load Order

When you’re standing in the garage trying to fit everything, load in this order: recovery gear first since it needs to be accessible fast, then safety and communication, then shelter and sleep, then water and food, then tools, then comfort items. If you run out of space, comfort items come out — not recovery gear.

The rigs that get into trouble aren’t the ones that packed too light. They’re the ones that packed the camp chairs and forgot the kinetic rope.
