Best Deep-Cycle Batteries for Trolling Motors: Lead-Acid, AGM, and Lithium Tested

The Battle Born BB10012 lithium battery is the best deep-cycle option for most trolling motor setups, full stop. But if you’re not ready to drop $900 on a single battery, the Optima D34M BlueTop AGM will run your 12V system reliably for six seasons at a third of the price. I’ve run all three chemistries (flooded lead-acid, AGM, and lithium) through the same trolling motor on the same lake for three years running, and the numbers below come from actual runtime logs, not manufacturer claims.

I fish a 16-foot aluminum jon boat with a Minn Kota Terrova 55 up front. Every battery mentioned here has spent real hours pushing that motor across water, not sitting on a bench getting theoretical numbers pulled from a spec sheet.

What Actually Matters When You’re Buying

Trolling motor batteries live a different life than a starting battery in your truck. A starting battery needs to dump 400+ cranking amps for three seconds. Your trolling motor battery needs to deliver a steady 20-40 amps for hours at a stretch. That’s a deep-cycle discharge, and it’s why you can’t just grab whatever’s cheapest at the auto parts store and expect it to last.

Three numbers matter more than anything else on the spec sheet:

  • Amp-hour (Ah) rating — this is your fuel tank size. A 100Ah battery theoretically gives you 100 amps for one hour, or 20 amps for five hours. Real-world numbers run lower because of the Peukert effect (lead-acid batteries lose efficiency under sustained load).
  • Cycle life — how many full charge/discharge cycles before capacity drops below 80%. This is where lithium blows lead-acid out of the water.
  • Depth of discharge (DoD) — how much of that capacity you can actually use without wrecking the battery. Flooded lead-acid: 50%. AGM: 50-80%. Lithium: 80-100%.

That last number is the one nobody talks about enough. A 100Ah lead-acid battery and a 100Ah lithium battery are not the same battery. The lithium gives you roughly double the usable capacity for the same rated Ah.

Flooded Lead-Acid: The Baseline

I started my testing with a pair of Interstate SRM-27 flooded deep-cycle batteries wired in parallel for 12V, the classic setup half the guys at my local ramp are still running. These are the battery equivalent of a Ford F-150 work truck: not exciting, but they get the job done and everyone knows how to work on them.

Runtime on my Terrova 55 at speed setting 3 (roughly 40% power): 6.5 hours before I hit 50% discharge, which is the cutoff you want to respect if you’re trying to get more than 2-3 seasons out of a flooded battery. Push past that regularly and you’ll kill the battery in a single season.

Charging time on a standard 10-amp charger: 8-10 hours to get back to full. That’s an overnight charge, which works fine if you’re a weekend angler, but it’s a problem if you’re running multiple days back to back without shore power.

The catch with flooded batteries: they need water top-offs every few weeks, they off-gas hydrogen when charging (so no sealed compartments), and they hate being stored in any position but upright. I’ve cracked two battery boxes over the years from acid spillage on rough water. Not fun.

Cost: The Interstate SRM-27 runs about $130-150 depending on your local core charge. Lifespan in my testing: 3 seasons of regular use (roughly 150 cycles) before capacity dropped noticeably.

Verdict: Fine if you’re budget-constrained and don’t mind maintenance. Not what I’d recommend if you’re buying new in 2024.

AGM: The Middle Ground That Actually Makes Sense

That’s about 10% better than the flooded Interstate, and the voltage curve stays flatter throughout the discharge, so your trolling motor doesn’t lose power as gradually near the end of the charge like it does with lead-acid.

Cost: $210-240 depending on retailer. Expected lifespan: 4-6 seasons (300-400 cycles) with reasonable care.

Verdict: This is the sweet spot for most anglers. Better runtime, zero maintenance, and a price point that doesn’t require a serious conversation with your spouse.

Lithium: Expensive Now, Cheap Over Time

The Battle Born BB10012 changed how I think about battery weight entirely. This is a 100Ah LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery that weighs 31 pounds. My Interstate SRM-27 weighs 62 pounds. That’s not a small difference when you’re hauling batteries in and out of a boat all season, or when you’re trying to keep weight down in a smaller jon boat where every pound affects how the boat sits in the water.

Runtime on the Terrova 55 at speed 3: 11.8 hours before hitting 20% remaining capacity. Remember: lithium lets you safely run down to near 100% DoD without damage, so that 11.8 hours is nearly double the usable runtime you get from flooded lead-acid at the same rated Ah.

This is the number that matters most for multi-day trips. I ran this battery for three straight days of dawn-to-dusk fishing on a trip to Lake of the Ozarks last spring, charging overnight each night, and never got below 40% remaining charge. That kind of margin is the difference between fishing with confidence and babying your trolling motor speed to stretch battery life.

Charging time is where lithium really separates itself. With a compatible lithium charger like the NOCO Genius GEN5X2, the Battle Born goes from 20% to full in about 2 hours. But run the math on cost per cycle: at 4,000 cycles, you’re looking at roughly $0.22 per cycle. The Optima AGM at 350 cycles and $225 comes out to about $0.64 per cycle.
