Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings Explained: Comfort, Limit, and Real-World Testing

That number on the sleeping bag tag isn’t a guarantee — it’s a starting point. Understanding what EN/ISO temperature ratings actually measure is the difference between sleeping soundly at 11,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies and shivering until sunrise.

I’ve tested bags from the San Juan Mountains in October to the Sonoran Desert in January. The single biggest mistake I see campers make is buying a bag based on the limit rating without understanding what that number means for their body.

What the EN/ISO Standard Actually Tests

Since 2005, reputable sleeping bag manufacturers have used the EN 13537 standard (updated to ISO 23537 in 2016) to rate their bags. The test uses a heated thermal manikin inside the bag on a sleeping pad, measuring heat loss across a range of temperatures. It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest thing the industry has to an apples-to-apples comparison.

The test produces four numbers. You’ll typically see two printed on the bag: the comfort rating and the lower limit rating. Some brands also list the extreme rating, which I’ll get to — and it’s not what most people think it is.

Comfort Rating

This is the temperature at which a “standard woman” can sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. In practice, it’s the temperature where most cold sleepers — regardless of gender — will feel genuinely warm. If you run cold, shop by this number.

Lower Limit Rating

This is the temperature at which a “standard man” can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking from cold. It’s the number most brands lead with in their marketing. A 20°F bag is almost always rated to 20°F at the lower limit, not the comfort rating. Cold sleepers who miss that distinction end up miserable.

Extreme Rating

This is a survival number, not a sleep number. At the extreme rating, the EN standard predicts risk of hypothermia. Don’t plan trips around it. I’ve seen people buy a bag rated 15°F extreme and assume it’s a 15°F bag. It isn’t. Not even close.

The Gap Between Ratings Is Bigger Than You Think

On most bags, the comfort rating runs 10–15°F warmer than the lower limit. A bag marketed as a “20°F bag” based on its lower limit typically has a comfort rating around 32–35°F. If you’re a cold sleeper camping at altitude, that gap will find you.

I tested the Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20 last fall on a three-night trip near Crested Butte, Colorado. Overnight lows hit 24°F. At the lower limit, that bag should’ve been fine. I slept cold both nights — not dangerously cold, but cold enough to notice. My sleeping partner, who runs warm, slept fine. That’s the EN standard working exactly as designed.

Cold sleeper? Buy to the comfort rating. Warm sleeper? The lower limit is probably accurate for you.

Real-World Colorado Examples

Colorado is a useful benchmark because the temperature swings are dramatic and well-documented. Here’s how I think about bag selection by season and elevation:

  • Summer above treeline (July–August): Lows regularly hit 35–45°F even in midsummer. A 32°F comfort-rated bag covers you. The Western Mountaineering Summerlite at 32°F comfort is my go-to for high-altitude summer trips — 19 oz dry weight and it actually delivers on that rating.
  • 3-season Front Range camping (May–October): Lows swing from 25°F to 50°F depending on month and elevation. A 15°F lower limit bag (roughly 25–28°F comfort) handles the full range. The REI Co-op Magma 15 hits this window well at 1 lb 14 oz.
  • Fall shoulder season (September–October) in the San Juans: Expect 15–25°F lows at 10,000+ feet. You want a 0°F lower limit bag or a 15°F comfort-rated bag. I’ve spent a lot of October nights in this range with the Feathered Friends Snowbunting EX 0 and never been cold.
  • Winter camping: Sub-zero is realistic. Get a bag rated to -20°F lower limit or colder, and pair it with a high-R sleeping pad. The bag rating means nothing if you’re losing heat through the ground.

Why Your Sleeping Pad Matters as Much as Your Bag

The EN/ISO test uses a standardized pad with an R-value of 4.0. If you’re sleeping on a pad with an R-value of 2.0 — like a lot of lightweight summer pads — your bag is performing worse than its rating suggests. Most people never account for this.

Match your pad R-value to your conditions before you start worrying about shaving ounces on your bag. A 3-season bag on a high-R pad will outperform a winter bag on a thin foam mat. Check out our sleeping pad R-value guide for the full breakdown.

For 3-season use, the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT at R-4.5 is the benchmark. For winter, step up to the NeoAir XTherm NXT at R-7.3. Both are tested under the ISO 23537 pad standard, so the numbers are directly comparable.

Down vs. Synthetic: How Fill Affects Real-World Performance

Temperature ratings apply equally to down and synthetic fills, but real-world performance diverges in wet conditions. Down loses loft — and therefore insulation — when it gets wet. Synthetic doesn’t. That matters in the Pacific Northwest or anywhere you’re camping in persistent moisture.

Treated down (850+ fill power, hydrophobic coating) has closed this gap considerably. The Rab Neutrino Pro 400 uses Nikwax Hydrophobic Down and performs within a few degrees of its rating even after light moisture exposure in my testing. But if you’re regularly camping in wet conditions, a synthetic bag like the Kelty Cosmic 20 is a more honest choice for the money.

For most Colorado camping — which tends toward dry cold — high-fill-power down is the right call. Better warmth-to-weight ratio, better compressibility, longer lifespan if you store it uncompressed.

How to Choose Your Rating

Don’t chase one bag that covers every trip. That bag doesn’t exist, and buying on that logic puts you staring at the tent ceiling at 2 a.m. when it’s 18°F.

Identify your coldest expected overnight low for the trips you actually take — not the worst-case scenario, your typical use case. Cold sleeper? Buy a bag where that temperature falls within the comfort rating. Warm sleeper? The lower limit works.

Add a 10°F buffer if you’re camping at altitude. Radiant heat loss is higher above treeline and conditions move fast. I’ve seen July nights in the Weminuche Wilderness drop to 28°F with no warning.

Check the R-value of the pad you’ll be using. Below R-4, your bag is underperforming its rating in cold conditions regardless of what the tag says.

Two bags beat one compromise bag every time. A 32°F bag and a 0°F bag cover 95% of 3-season and winter camping. A liner adds 5–15°F to either.

For most 3-season trips in the American West, a bag with a 15–20°F lower limit (25–30°F comfort) is the right tool. The EN/ISO rating system is the best standardized tool we have, but it’s a tool — not a promise. Know whether you’re a cold or warm sleeper. Buy to the comfort rating if you’re cold. Account for your pad R-value. And check which rating the marketing number actually represents before you hand over your money.
