RV Propane Heater Systems: Stay Warm Without Draining Power

A propane heater is the single best way to heat an RV through winter without destroying your battery bank. Electric resistance heat pulls 1,500 watts continuous for a small ceramic unit — and shore power doesn’t exist when you’re parked on BLM land outside Moab in January. Propane solves that problem with enough BTU output to keep a 30-foot rig comfortable at 10°F.

I’ve spent six winters running rigs from the Ozarks to the Colorado high country, testing heater systems in actual cold — not parking lot demos. Here’s what works.

The Three Types of RV Propane Heaters

Forced-air, radiant, and catalytic heaters all burn propane, but they behave completely differently inside a rig. Know what you’re choosing before you buy.

Forced-Air Furnaces

Most RVs ship from the factory with a forced-air propane furnace — a Suburban or Atwood unit tucked under a dinette or in a basement compartment. These push heated air through ducts to registers throughout the coach. They heat fast, they heat evenly, and they handle serious cold without complaint. A standard 30,000 BTU furnace brings a 28-foot travel trailer from 30°F to 68°F in under 20 minutes.

The catch is battery draw. The blower motor on a typical forced-air furnace pulls 7–12 amps at 12V while running. Four hours overnight and you’ve pulled 40–50 amp-hours — a real chunk of a 100Ah battery. Boondocking on solar with a modest bank, that’s a hard constraint.

Radiant Propane Heaters

Radiant heaters skip the air entirely — they heat objects and people directly through infrared radiation. Mr. Heater’s Big Buddy is the most common example in the RV world. Portable, zero electricity required, 4,000–18,000 BTUs depending on the model.

The limitation is distribution. A radiant heater warms whatever is in its line of sight — the front of the rig, not the back bedroom. They’re also open-flame units, which means ventilation requirements and CO monitoring are non-negotiable. More on that below.

Catalytic Heaters

Catalytic heaters are the most underrated option in this category. They use a platinum catalyst to oxidize propane without an open flame, producing radiant heat at lower surface temperatures. The Camco Olympian Wave-6 is the benchmark — 6,000 BTUs, no electricity, no open flame, and measurably lower CO output than a standard burner.

Catalytic units heat slowly compared to forced-air, but they’re whisper-quiet, fuel-efficient, and safe enough to run overnight in a ventilated space. For mild cold — 25°F to 45°F — they’re the right call for boondockers watching their propane supply.

Battery Draw: The Real Comparison

Most RV content goes soft here. I won’t.

  • Forced-air furnace (30,000 BTU): 7–12A draw at 12V while running. Cycles on/off, so actual overnight consumption runs 30–60Ah depending on outside temp and thermostat setting.
  • Radiant heater (Mr. Heater Big Buddy): 0A draw. Runs entirely on propane. The piezo igniter uses a negligible pulse.
  • Catalytic heater (Camco Wave-6): 0A draw. Pure propane, no blower, no electronics.

Running a 200Ah lithium bank with 400W of solar, a forced-air furnace is manageable. On a stock 100Ah AGM with no solar, your factory furnace running all night in serious cold will leave you with a dead coach battery by morning. That’s not a theoretical problem — I’ve watched it happen to three different rigs parked next to me in the Gila. A zero-draw propane heater stops that from happening.

Fuel Consumption: What to Expect

These are numbers from my own rigs, not manufacturer estimates:

  • A 30,000 BTU forced-air furnace burns roughly 1/3 gallon of propane per hour at full output. Cycling at 50% duty overnight burns about 1.5–2 gallons.
  • The Mr. Heater Big Buddy at 18,000 BTUs burns a 1-lb cylinder in about 3 hours. On a 20-lb tank with an adapter hose, you’re looking at 50+ hours at the medium (9,000 BTU) setting.
  • The Camco Wave-6 at 6,000 BTUs is the most fuel-efficient option — a 20-lb tank lasts 100+ hours at full output.

For extended boondocking, catalytic wins on fuel economy. For fast heat in a large rig, forced-air wins on performance. I run both — factory furnace to bring the rig up to temp quickly, then the Wave-6 to hold temperature overnight. That combination has worked from the Ozarks in November down to the Chihuahuan Desert in January.

Best Portable Radiant: Mr. Heater Big Buddy

The Mr. Heater Big Buddy puts out 4,000, 9,000, or 18,000 BTUs and runs on two 1-lb cylinders or a 20-lb tank with an adapter hose. The built-in ODS (oxygen depletion sensor) shuts the unit off if oxygen levels drop — that’s the feature that makes it viable for enclosed spaces. I’ve run one in a 24-foot travel trailer at 15°F and held the main living area at 65°F on the medium setting all night.

That’s a real safety and air quality advantage over older designs that breathe your interior air.

Safety: What You Can’t Skip

Propane combustion produces carbon monoxide. Any propane heater — including catalytic units — requires CO monitoring and adequate ventilation. This is operational reality, not fine print.

Every RV needs a combination propane/CO detector mounted low in the living space. Propane is heavier than air and settles at floor level; CO disperses throughout. A combo unit catches both. The Kidde combination CO and propane detector is what I run — RV-rated, battery-backed, and loud enough to wake you up from a dead sleep.

For ventilation: crack a window or roof vent slightly whenever running any open-flame or catalytic heater. A 1-inch gap on a roof vent creates enough air exchange to prevent dangerous CO buildup without dropping interior temperature in any way you’ll notice. I know it feels wrong in the cold. Do it anyway.

Rules I follow without exception:

  • Never run a radiant heater unattended while sleeping unless it has a certified ODS shutoff.
  • Keep a 3-foot clearance around any open-flame unit — bedding, curtains, and clothing are all ignition risks.
  • Check propane connections annually for leaks using soapy water or a dedicated leak detector spray.
  • Know where your main propane shutoff valve is and how to close it in under 10 seconds.

Efficiency Tips That Actually Make a Difference

No heater compensates for a poorly insulated rig. Before you spend money on heating hardware, address your thermal envelope.

Relocating or adding a remote thermostat to a central location cuts furnace run time 20–30% — I’ve measured this on two different rigs.

The Bottom Line

For boondocking in serious cold with a limited battery bank, the Camco Wave-6 paired with your factory furnace for quick heat-up is the most efficient system I’ve run. Zero battery draw overnight, low fuel consumption, and enough BTU output to hold temperature in a well-insulated rig down to the mid-teens.

On full hookups or running a solid lithium/solar setup, your factory forced-air furnace is perfectly adequate — just make sure it’s been serviced recently, the heat exchanger is clean, and the duct seals are intact. A dirty, leaky forced-air system burns 30% more propane than a maintained one. That’s not an estimate; that’s what I’ve measured pulling and cleaning neglected Suburban units.

Don’t cut corners on CO detection and ventilation. The heater doesn’t matter if you’re not around to use it next season.
