Best Road Trip Vehicles for Camping: SUVs, Vans & Trucks Compared

What to Measure Before You Choose a Platform

Four specs determine whether a vehicle works for camping: interior cargo length (flat sleeping surface), payload capacity, ground clearance, and highway fuel economy. Everything else — storage systems, bedding, power — you can add after the fact. Floor space you cannot.

Interior cargo length cuts the list fastest. Over 5’10”? You need at least 72 inches of flat floor. That rules out most compact SUVs without a diagonal sleep setup or a roof tent. Payload matters the second you start adding a fridge, a battery system, and a water tank — those add-ons hit 200–400 lbs fast. And fuel economy on a 3,000-mile road trip is the difference between a $400 gas bill and a $700 one.

Compact SUVs: The Toyota RAV4 and Ford Bronco Sport Class

The Case For

Compact SUVs are the most practical daily drivers in this comparison. The 2024 Toyota RAV4 gets 30 mpg highway, seats five, fits in a standard parking garage, and starts around $30,000. The Ford Bronco Sport Badlands — my pick for off-road capability in this class — has 8.8 inches of ground clearance and a 2,200 lb tow rating. Those aren’t weekend warrior numbers.

For solo campers or couples who don’t need to stand up inside, a compact SUV with the rear seats folded gives you a functional sleep platform. The RAV4’s cargo area measures 69.8 inches with seats down — just under the 72-inch threshold. Under 5’10”, you’re fine. Taller, a slight diagonal or a platform that uses the wheel wells solves it.

The Case Against

Payload is the ceiling. The RAV4’s rated payload is 1,500 lbs, which sounds like margin until you account for two adults, gear, food, water, and any build-out. You’ll hit 80% of that fast. The Bronco Sport Badlands checks in at 1,540 lbs — same story. You can run a compact fridge and a modest battery setup, but you’re not building a full overlander in a RAV4 without watching the numbers carefully.

Conversion costs are low — figure $500–$1,500 for a plywood sleep platform, foam topper, and basic storage. The tradeoff is a tight box with no room to sit up comfortably, and wet gear has nowhere to go except on top of you.

Resale Value

The RAV4 holds value better than almost any vehicle in its class — 5-year depreciation around 30%, compared to 40–50% for domestic trucks and vans. If you’re not sure camping is a long-term habit, a RAV4 is the lowest-risk platform to start on.

Best for: Solo campers, couples under 5’10”, budget-conscious buyers, anyone who needs a daily driver that doesn’t announce they sleep in their car.

Full-Size SUVs: The Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe Class

The Case For

Full-size SUVs solve the space problem compact SUVs can’t. A 2024 Ford Expedition MAX with the third row folded gives you 104.6 cubic feet of cargo space and a flat floor over 80 inches — enough for two adults sleeping lengthwise, no diagonal required. The Chevy Tahoe hits 94.7 cubic feet in the same configuration. I’ve verified both with a tape measure.

Payload on the Expedition MAX runs up to 1,620 lbs. Tow rating hits 9,300 lbs. You can pull a trailer, carry a rooftop tent, run a 40-quart fridge, and still have margin. Ground clearance on the Expedition is 9.4 inches stock — better than most people expect from a full-size family hauler.

The Case Against

Fuel economy takes a real hit. The Expedition MAX gets 17 mpg highway with the 3.5L EcoBoost. On a 3,000-mile trip at $3.50/gallon, that’s roughly $617 in fuel versus $350 in the RAV4. Over a summer of road trips, that gap compounds. You’re also buying a $60,000+ vehicle and parking it in trailhead lots where door dings are guaranteed.

Conversion costs run $1,000–$3,000 for a proper platform build with storage drawers, a sleeping surface, and a basic power system. Interior height in a Tahoe or Expedition is around 42–44 inches with the headliner — you can sit up, but you can’t stand. On a rainy day stuck inside for six hours, that matters.

Resale Value

Full-size SUVs depreciate harder than compact SUVs — expect 40–45% over five years. The Tahoe holds slightly better than the Expedition historically, but neither is a strong investment. Buy used. A 2020–2021 Expedition MAX with under 60,000 miles beats new on value every time.

Best for: Families, couples who want real sleeping space without a van conversion, anyone towing a boat or trailer between campsites.

Vans: The Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster Class

The Case For

Camp more than 30 nights a year and a van is the right answer. The Ford Transit 148″ Extended High Roof gives you 6’2″ of standing height and over 130 inches of cargo length — enough for a full queen bed, a kitchen, a 50-gallon water system, and a 200Ah lithium battery setup without touching the cab. I spent 47 nights in a Transit build over two summers running gear tests across the Southwest. The quality-of-life difference over any SUV is not subtle.

The Ram ProMaster 2500 High Roof is the other serious contender. It’s front-wheel drive — which sounds like a liability but actually improves traction in snow and mud compared to rear-wheel-drive Transits — and the boxy interior makes conversion easier. Payload on the ProMaster 2500 hits 4,680 lbs. Build heavy and don’t worry about it.

A well-executed van build is a legitimate living space. You can cook a real meal standing up, change clothes without contorting, and sleep in a fixed bed without breaking anything down. On extended trips, that’s what keeps you from burning out by week two.

The Case Against

Conversion costs are the wall most people hit. A DIY Transit build done right — insulation, flooring, framing, electrical, bed, kitchen — runs $5,000–$15,000 in materials. A professional build from Outside Van or Storyteller Overland runs $50,000–$120,000 on top of the vehicle.

Fuel economy on a Transit 3.5L EcoBoost is 24 mpg highway — better than most people expect, and competitive with a loaded full-size SUV. The 2.0L EcoBlue diesel Transit, available used from fleet sales, hits 28–30 mpg highway and is worth hunting for on high-mileage trips.

Off-road capability is the honest limitation. Stock Transit and ProMaster vans have 5–6 inches of ground clearance. They handle gravel forest roads and most BLM two-tracks, but they’re not going where a 4Runner goes. If your camping involves serious off-pavement driving, you’re either adding a lift kit or accepting the constraint.

For van insulation — one of the most important and most botched parts of any build — Havelock Wool is what I used in my last Transit build. It’s moisture-resistant, doesn’t off-gas, and outperforms spray foam in temperature swings above 8,000 feet.

Cargo vans depreciate fast off the lot — 45–55% over five years for a new Transit. A well-converted van with documented build quality sells above book value in the current market. Trucks: The Toyota Tacoma and Ford F-150 Class

The Case For

Trucks give you something no other platform does: separation between your living space and your drivetrain. Your cab stays clean. Your gear lives in the bed. With the right truck camper or bed setup, you’ve got a capable overlanding rig that doubles as a work truck Monday morning.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is the benchmark in this class — 9.4 inches of ground clearance, 1,440 lb payload, locking rear differential, 6,500 lb tow rating. The new 2.4L turbo-hybrid powertrain gets 23 mpg highway. I ran a Tacoma with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper through 1,200 miles of Arizona and Utah backcountry last spring. It handled everything without drama.

The Ford F-150 is the better choice if you need more payload and tow capacity. The F-150 with the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid hits 24 mpg highway, carries up to 2,238 lbs of payload, and tows up to 12,700 lbs. Running a slide-in truck camper — which adds 1,000–2,500 lbs dry — the F-150 is the platform that gives you real margin.

Sleeping Configurations

Trucks branch hard on sleeping setup. Three main options: a rooftop tent on a bed rack, a soft or hard shell topper with a sleeping platform, or a slide-in truck camper. Each has a different cost and capability profile.

Add a plywood platform and a 3-inch foam topper and you’re sleeping in a weatherproof box for under $3,000 total. The downside: you’re back to the compact SUV problem — low interior height, no standing room.

Slide-in truck campers are the premium option. The Lance 650 fits a short-bed F-150, weighs 1,231 lbs dry, and gives you a real bed, a kitchen, and a bathroom in a package that comes off the truck when you want your truck back. That modularity is something no van or SUV can match. Budget $20,000–$45,000 for a quality slide-in.

The Case Against

Payload is the trap that kills truck camping setups. The Tacoma’s 1,440 lb payload sounds reasonable until you add two adults (400 lbs), a rooftop tent (110 lbs), a bed rack (80 lbs), a 40-quart fridge (45 lbs), food and water for a week (100+ lbs), and the rest of your gear. You’re at 80–90% of payload before you’ve added anything else. The F-150 has more margin, but you’re spending $50,000+ to get it.

Fuel economy drops under load. A Tacoma towing a trailer or running a loaded bed gets 19–21 mpg in real-world highway conditions. An F-150 with a slide-in camper is looking at 14–17 mpg. Factor that into your trip budget before you commit.

Resale Value

Tacomas hold value better than almost any vehicle on the market — 5-year depreciation around 25–28%. One of the few vehicles where buying new actually makes financial sense. F-150s depreciate faster (35–40% over five years) but have a massive used market that keeps prices liquid. Either way, trucks are the strongest resale play in this comparison.

Best for: Off-road camping, anyone who wants modularity (truck camper on, truck camper off), overlanders, people who need serious tow capacity.

Power and Refrigeration: The Add-Ons That Matter Most

For off-road camping specifically, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the platform I’d choose starting over. The resale value alone makes it the lowest-risk truck on the market, and the aftermarket support means you can build it as capable as you need. The F-150 PowerBoost is the better call if payload and tow capacity outweigh off-road geometry.

Buying a full-size SUV new for camping is the worst move in this comparison. You’re spending $60,000+ on a vehicle that depreciates hard, gets 17 mpg, and still doesn’t give you standing room. Buy used, or choose a different class entirely.

Buy the platform that matches how you actually camp. The RAV4 that gets used 40 nights a year beats the Expedition that sits in the driveway looking capable.
