Overlanding Tires vs. Regular Tires: When to Upgrade & What to Buy

Your factory tires are holding you back. Stock all-seasons on a rig you’re taking off pavement — even occasionally — means you’re leaving traction and capability behind. The difference between a highway tire and a purpose-built all-terrain isn’t just tread depth. It’s sidewall construction, void ratio, compound hardness, and whether you’re driving home or waiting on a tow truck.

I’ve run overlanding tires through volcanic rock fields in eastern Oregon, sand washes in the Sonoran Desert, and 600-mile highway slogs back to Boise. I know what separates a tire that earns its price from one that gets you stranded.

The Three Tire Categories You Need to Understand

Highway tires (HT), all-terrain tires (AT), and mud-terrain tires (MT) aren’t marketing buckets. They represent genuinely different engineering priorities. Get this wrong and you’ll buy the wrong tire twice.

Highway Tires: Fine Until They’re Not

Highway tires — what most trucks and SUVs ship with — are optimized for pavement. Low rolling resistance, quiet ride, good wet-road braking. The Michelin Defender LTX M/S is the benchmark: 820 UTQG treadwear rating, 72 dB highway noise, excellent wet traction. On asphalt, it’s hard to beat.

Off pavement, the story changes fast. Highway tires have tight tread patterns with small void ratios — the gaps between tread blocks are narrow. Mud, sand, and loose rock pack into those voids immediately. Once packed, you’re riding on a slick. I’ve watched guys in brand-new Tacomas get beached in six inches of sand because they wouldn’t swap their factory Bridgestone Duelers.

If 90% of your miles are highway and “off-road” means a graded forest service road twice a year, keep the highway tires. The moment you’re airing down below 25 PSI regularly, you’ve outgrown them.

All-Terrain Tires: The Overlander’s Workhorse

All-terrain tires are where most serious overlanders land, and the reason is simple: they split the difference between on-road manners and genuine off-road capability. Void ratios typically run 25-35%, compared to 15-20% on highway tires. Better self-cleaning in mud, better bite on loose surfaces, without turning your daily commute into a tire-roar nightmare.

The BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is the tire I recommend more than any other in this category. It’s been my go-to across three separate rigs over the past decade. The KO2 runs a 3-ply sidewall with interlocking tread blocks that resist splitting on sharp rock. BFGoodrich rates it for 50,000 miles — I’ve consistently hit 45,000-55,000 depending on load and terrain mix. In a 285/70R17, dry weight runs around 51 lbs, manageable for trail swaps.

The Toyo Open Country A/T III is the KO2’s closest competitor and edges it out on highway noise — about 2-3 dB quieter in back-to-back testing on the same vehicle. Toyo’s tri-radius sipe technology gives it better wet braking than the KO2: 127 feet vs. 134 feet at 60-0 mph in Consumer Reports data. If you’re doing more pavement than dirt, the AT III is worth the conversation.

Both tires handle airing down to 18-20 PSI for sand and soft terrain without sidewall rollover issues. That’s the real test. A tire that squirms off the bead at low pressure is useless in the desert.

Mud-Terrain Tires: Maximum Bite, Real Costs

Mud-terrain tires are built around one priority: traction in soft, loose, or deeply rutted terrain. Void ratios hit 35-50%. Tread blocks are large, aggressive, and widely spaced. Sidewall lugs extend down toward the rim to grip when you’re buried to the axle.

The Nitto Trail Grappler M/T is the MT I’d buy if I were running technical trails more than three weekends a month. It’s a hybrid MT — slightly less aggressive than the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3, but dramatically better on highway. Highway noise on the Trail Grappler runs 74-76 dB. The KM3 hits 78-80 dB at speed. That’s the difference between tolerable and fatiguing on a 10-hour drive.

Expect 30,000-40,000 miles max from any MT, and that’s if you’re not hammering them on pavement. Soft compound plus aggressive pattern equals fast wear on asphalt. I ran a set of KM3s on my FJ Cruiser for two years — phenomenal in the Cascades, chewed down to 4/32nds by mile 32,000. For a dedicated trail rig that trailers to the trailhead, that’s acceptable. For a daily driver that also overlands, you’re buying tires every two years.

Real-World Performance by Terrain Type

Rock Crawling

On technical rock, sidewall strength matters more than tread pattern. A punctured sidewall ends your trip. The KO2’s 3-ply sidewall and the Trail Grappler’s reinforced carcass both handle sharp basalt and granite without drama. I’ve run both on the Rubicon Trail and in the Ouachita backcountry in Arkansas — neither gave me a sidewall failure in conditions that destroyed two sets of highway tires on other rigs in the same group.

Air down to 15-18 PSI on technical rock. This increases your contact patch, conforms the tire to the surface, and dramatically reduces puncture risk from point loading. A quality deflator tool gets you to target pressure in under two minutes per tire. Carry one.

Highway tires on rock crawling terrain: don’t. Thin sidewalls and packed tread voids mean you’re one sharp edge away from a walk-out.

Sand

Sand is a flotation game. You want maximum contact patch and a tire that paddles loose material rearward. Air down to 12-15 PSI for soft sand — lower than most people think is safe, but structurally fine at low speeds with a quality AT or MT.

The KO2 performs surprisingly well in sand for an AT. The open shoulder design sheds material cleanly. The Toyo AT III is slightly less capable here — its tighter center rib improves highway manners but reduces sand self-cleaning. In the Algodones Dunes, I’ve watched KO2-equipped rigs float through sections where AT III trucks had to make multiple runs.

For dedicated sand running — Baja, the Oregon Dunes, Glamis — an MT with wide-spaced blocks paddles better. You’ll pay for it every mile home on the highway.

Mud

This is where ATs hit their ceiling. In deep, sticky clay mud, even the best AT will pack out. The KO2 handles moderate mud well — its siping and void ratio clear reasonably in loamy forest mud. In the kind of axle-deep clay you find in the Pacific Northwest after a wet spring, you need MT tread to self-clean under rotation.

The Nitto Trail Grappler’s wide voids and staggered shoulder blocks throw mud aggressively. In back-to-back testing on a muddy two-track in the Willamette Valley, the Trail Grappler cleared completely within one wheel rotation. The KO2 took three to four rotations before traction recovered. In a tight spot, that’s the difference between momentum and getting stuck.

Highway Performance

Rolling resistance directly affects fuel economy. A set of aggressive MTs on a full-size truck will drop your highway MPG by 1.5-3 MPG compared to a quality AT. On a 20,000-mile year at $3.50/gallon, that’s $350-700 in extra fuel annually.

Noise is the other highway factor. The Toyo AT III is the quietest AT I’ve run — genuinely close to highway tire noise levels. The KO2 has a slight hum above 65 mph that you stop noticing after a week. Any MT is going to be loud. The Trail Grappler is the quietest MT I’ve tested, and it’s still louder than any AT.

When to Actually Upgrade

  • 95%+ pavement, occasional graded dirt roads: Keep your highway tires. The KO2 or AT III is overkill — you’ll pay in noise and fuel economy for capability you never use.
  • 70-90% pavement, regular forest roads, occasional technical terrain: All-terrain. KO2 or Toyo AT III. Zero meaningful sacrifice on pavement, real capability off it.
  • 50-70% pavement, frequent technical terrain, mixed mud and rock: The KO2 still works here, but look at the Nitto Ridge Grappler — a hybrid AT/MT that splits the difference better than either pure category.
  • Mostly off-road, trailers to trailhead, dedicated trail rig: MT. Trail Grappler or KM3. Don’t compromise capability to save highway noise you’re not generating.

Size and Load Rating: Don’t Overlook the Specs

Tire size affects clearance, gearing, speedometer accuracy, and load capacity. Going up one size — say from a 265/70R17 to a 285/70R17 — increases overall diameter by roughly 1.1 inches and circumference by 3.5 inches. That throws off your speedometer by about 4% and effectively raises your gear ratio, which hurts low-speed crawling torque if you’re not running a regear.

Load rating matters if you’re running a roof tent, heavy bumpers, or a loaded truck bed. The KO2 in E-load rating handles 3,195 lbs per tire. Standard D-load is 2,833 lbs. If your rig is loaded for a two-week trip, the math on four tires matters. I run E-load on my overland truck.

For re-inflation after airing down, the VIAIR 400P fills a 35-inch tire from 15 PSI to 35 PSI in under eight minutes. I’ve carried one for four years. Don’t leave the trailhead without it.

Which Tire to Buy

For 80% of overlanders, the BFGoodrich KO2 is the right tire. It handles everything short of dedicated mud running, it lasts, and it won’t make your daily commute miserable. Highway-heavy with wet roads to worry about? The Toyo AT III edges it out. Running serious technical terrain more than you’re running pavement? Step up to the Nitto Trail Grappler and accept the trade-offs.

Keep running factory highway tires on a rig you’re taking off-road and you’re not saving money — you’re building toward a recovery situation, usually at the worst possible time, usually far from cell service.
