Do Surfboard Fins Really Make a Difference? Performance Testing

Yes — fins make a bigger difference than almost any other single variable on your board. Swap a set of stiff, upright glass fins for a flexy, raked template and you’re effectively riding a different board. I’ve tested this back-to-back on the same stick, same break, same conditions. The results aren’t subtle.

Most surfers upgrade their board before they ever seriously experiment with fins. That’s backwards. A $60 fin swap can unlock performance your current board already has. I’ve watched it happen enough times that I stopped being surprised by it.

The Three Variables That Actually Matter

Template (Outline Shape)

Template controls how a fin pivots through a turn. An upright fin with a wide base generates drive — it pushes water hard off the tail and accelerates you down the line. A raked fin, swept back at a longer angle, increases hold in powerful surf and smooths out your arc. The difference in feel is a pivot turn versus a drawn-out carve.

I ran the same thruster setup through six sessions at Trestles last fall — three with the FCS II Performer PC Tri (upright template) and three with the FCS II Carver Neo Glass Tri (raked). The Performer felt snappier off the top, easier to redirect in punchy, shoulder-high surf. Size

Fin size is the most misunderstood variable. Bigger fins aren’t always better. FCS publishes sizing charts based on body weight. I’m 185 lbs and consistently ride medium fins in most conditions — that puts me right at the upper edge of the medium range (165–190 lbs). When I dropped to small fins on a head-high day at Rincon, the tail slid out mid-turn on two separate rides. Not catastrophic, but I lost drive both times. Went back to mediums the next session and the problem was gone.

Material and Flex

Fin material determines how the fin loads and releases through a turn — what surfers call “flex pattern.” A stiffer fin (fiberglass, carbon) transfers energy immediately. A flexy fin (plastic, softer composite) stores energy through the turn and releases it at the exit, which can feel like a spring-loaded pop off the bottom.

Futures grades their materials on a flex index. Their plastic fins (Alpha series) flex significantly more than their Techflex or carbon options. If You’re Still Building Your Pop-Up

Ride a larger, flexy plastic fin. You’re not generating enough speed or applying enough precise foot pressure to feel the difference between a carbon template and a fiberglass one. What you will feel is a fin that’s too stiff making your board feel locked and unresponsive — and that kills confidence faster than anything else in the water.

If You’re Surfing 2-3 Days a Week and Reading Breaks

You’re generating real speed, initiating turns intentionally, and you have enough body awareness to notice when a fin is holding you back or opening things up. Fin selection starts to pay off at this level.

Buy two sets and start swapping based on conditions. A medium upright fin for beach break and smaller surf, a medium raked fin for overhead days or point breaks with longer walls. If You’re Surfing Competitively or Chasing Performance

Fin choice is a legitimate competitive variable at this level. World Tour surfers change fins between heats based on conditions. You should be doing the same thing, even if your “competition” is just getting your best session of the week.

The Futures AM2 Techflex is what I reach for in solid overhead surf. Both systems have deep fin libraries. Match the system to your current board’s boxes and spend your energy on the water instead.

The Test That Settled It For Me

Three years ago I ran a controlled test I still reference. Same 6’2″ shortboard, same break (Swamis, Encinitas), same two-hour window on a consistent 4-6 foot day. I rode four different fin sets back-to-back, swapping every 20 minutes. I filmed every session from the channel and had a friend score turns on a 1-10 scale without knowing which fins I was riding.

The scoring spread between the worst-performing fins and the best was 1.8 points on average. That’s the difference between a 6.5 and an 8.3 in a contest heat. The stiff, upright carbon fins scored highest in the punchy, hollow conditions we had that day. The flexy plastic fins scored lowest — not because they’re bad fins, but because they were wrong for those conditions.

The right fin for the day beats the “best” fin every time. That’s what the test showed.
