Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Watches: Understanding Ratings & Standards

No watch is truly “waterproof” — that’s a marketing term with no standardized meaning. What matters are ATM ratings, bar ratings, and ISO standards, because those numbers determine whether your watch survives a splash or a 40-meter dive.

I’ve killed two watches trusting vague labeling. One was a “water-resistant” fitness tracker that died in a kayak roll on the Gauley River. The other was a dive-rated watch I wore into a hot tub — thermal shock cracked the gasket seal. Both were my fault. I didn’t read the ratings closely enough.

ATM and Bar: What the Numbers Actually Mean

ATM stands for atmospheres. One ATM equals roughly 10 meters of static water pressure, or about 14.7 PSI. Bar is the same unit — 1 bar ≈ 1 ATM. You’ll see both on spec sheets. They’re interchangeable.

Here’s where people go wrong: the rating is a static pressure test, not a real-world depth guarantee. A watch rated to 3 ATM handles rain and a brief hand-washing. It cannot handle swimming. The dynamic pressure from a freestyle stroke or a hard wrist flick spikes well beyond what the static rating suggests.

  • 1–2 ATM (10–20m): Splash-proof only. Rain, hand-washing. Don’t swim with it.
  • 3 ATM (30m): Light surface water contact. Still not swim-rated despite what some brands imply.
  • 5 ATM (50m): Swimming in shallow water, snorkeling at the surface. No diving.
  • 10 ATM (100m): Recreational snorkeling, water sports, surface swimming. This is the minimum I’d take kayaking.
  • 20 ATM (200m): Scuba diving, serious water sports. ISO 6425 dive watch territory starts here.

ISO 6425: The Only Standard That Actually Matters for Divers

ISO 6425 is the international standard for dive watches, and it’s the only certification that involves real-world stress testing. A watch certified to ISO 6425 must withstand 125% of its rated depth in static pressure, survive a 30-minute condensation test, pass shock resistance testing, and maintain legibility in low light.

ISO 22810 covers water-resistant watches in the non-dive category — anything rated 100m or less — and requires testing at 10% over rated depth. Less rigorous than ISO 6425, but still a real benchmark. If a watch claims water resistance without citing either standard, that claim means nothing.

The Garmin Fenix 7 series is rated to 10 ATM and meets MIL-STD-810H for water resistance — not ISO 6425, which is the right call for a GPS multisport watch rather than a dive computer. Know that before you take it below 30 meters.

Smartwatches: Apple, Garmin, and Suunto Compared

Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is rated to 100m under EN 13319, the European standard for recreational diving accessories. Apple also certifies it for recreational scuba to 40 meters. That’s a real rating — not marketing copy — and it’s why I’d take the Ultra 2 over the standard Apple Watch Series 9 (rated to 50m) for open-water swimming or snorkeling.

The Ultra 2 runs a dedicated dive app through Oceanic+ that turns it into a functional dive computer. Dry weight is 61.4g on the titanium case. For recreational divers who want one device on their wrist, it delivers. For technical diving, get a dedicated computer.

Garmin Fenix 7X Solar

The Fenix 7X Solar is rated to 10 ATM (100m) and meets MIL-STD-810H. Mine has been through Class III whitewater on the Chattooga, saltwater kayaking off the Georgia coast, and a week of rain in the Smokies. Zero issues. The sapphire lens on the Solar edition resists scratching better than standard glass — that matters when you’re crawling through rock gardens.

Battery life hits 37 days in smartwatch mode with solar charging. That’s the number that separates it from the Apple Watch on multi-day backcountry trips where charging isn’t happening. It’s not ISO 6425 dive-certified, but for surface water sports and hard adventure use, 10 ATM is more than you need.

Suunto D5

If you’re actually diving, buy the Suunto D5. It’s a dedicated dive computer rated to 100m with full ISO 6425 certification. It tracks nitrogen loading, decompression stops, and dive profiles. A Garmin or Apple Watch does not do this — not with the accuracy that keeps you safe at depth.

Dry weight is 89g with the silicone strap. The color display reads clearly at depth, and the Suunto app syncs dive logs automatically. Using a Fenix 7 for scuba is like using a trekking pole as a canoe paddle — it works until it really doesn’t.

The Hot Tub Problem (and Other Thermal Traps)

Water resistance ratings are tested at room temperature. Hot tubs, saunas, and hot springs introduce thermal expansion that blows out gasket seals on even well-rated watches. I know this firsthand — a 10 ATM-rated watch fogged permanently after one hot tub session. It never recovered.

Garmin explicitly says to keep the Fenix series out of hot showers and hot tubs. Apple says the same for the Ultra 2. The heat degrades adhesives and gaskets over time, and no ATM rating accounts for it. Most manufacturers void water resistance warranties for hot tub and sauna exposure regardless of depth rating.

Gasket Maintenance: The Part Nobody Talks About

Water resistance degrades. Gaskets dry out, crown seals wear, and impact damage creates micro-fractures that drop your effective depth rating without any visible warning. A watch that was legitimately 10 ATM new can be functionally 3 ATM after two years of hard use with no maintenance.

Get your watch pressure-tested every 12–24 months if you’re regularly submerging it. For dive watches, that’s non-negotiable. For sports watches used in surface water, every two years is reasonable. Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater exposure — salt chews through gasket material faster than almost anything else.

Budget Pick: Casio G-Shock GWM5610

The Casio G-Shock GWM5610 is rated to 20 ATM (200m), solar-powered, and atomic timekeeping-synced. Dry weight is 51g. It’s not a smartwatch. It doesn’t need to be. Twenty ATM on a $100 watch is hard to argue with for kayaking, surfing, or any surface water activity.

I keep one in my dry bag as a backup on multi-day river trips. It’s taken more abuse than I’d want to admit and never complained. Best value in water-ready watches, full stop.

Bottom Line

Serious diving: Suunto D5. ISO 6425 certified, purpose-built, no compromises. Adventure sports and surface water: Garmin Fenix 7X Solar at 10 ATM handles whitewater to open-ocean swimming. One device for everything including recreational scuba: Apple Watch Ultra 2 at 100m EN 13319 is the real deal. Bulletproof water resistance on a budget: Casio G-Shock GWM5610 at 20 ATM.

Check the ATM rating. Look for an ISO standard citation. Rinse with fresh water after saltwater. Get the gaskets tested every couple of years. The watch holds up. Neglected seals don’t.
