How to Find RV Boondocking Sites: Apps, Maps & Insider Tips
The Best Free Camping Is Already Mapped — You Just Need the Right Tools
Free dispersed camping on public land exists across millions of acres in the American West, and most of it goes completely unoccupied on any given night. The problem isn’t availability — it’s knowing where to look and how to vet a site before you’re 12 miles down a two-track with a 32-foot Class A.
I’ve been boondocking in everything from a converted van to a 26-foot travel trailer for going on eight years. The apps have gotten dramatically better in the last three. Here’s what I actually use, what I’ve dropped, and how to layer these resources so you stop guessing and start camping.
Understand the Land Before You Search for Sites
Boondocking is legal on most Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) land unless posted otherwise. That’s roughly 245 million acres of BLM land and 193 million acres of National Forest — the bulk of it in the West. National Parks and state parks operate under different rules; dispersed camping is generally not allowed there.
The 14-day rule applies on most BLM land: you can stay at a single spot for up to 14 consecutive days before you need to move at least 25 miles. Some high-use areas run tighter — the BLM’s Quartzsite, Arizona area drops to specific zones during the January–February snowbird season. Check the local field office website before you commit to a destination. Every time.
The Apps That Actually Work
The Dyrt Pro
The Dyrt is the most actively maintained camping database I’ve found. The free tier gives you user-submitted campsite reviews with photos, but The Dyrt Pro ($35.99/year) is where it earns its keep. You get offline maps, BLM and USFS land overlays, and a trip-planning tool that filters by RV length, hookups (or lack thereof), and road surface.
The crowd-sourced review system earns its keep. When a site has 40 reviews and 35 of them mention “rough road after mile marker 7,” that’s actionable intel. I’ve dodged at least three potential axle-buster situations because of Dyrt reviews alone. Thirty-six bucks. It pays for itself on the first trip.
iOverlander
iOverlander started as a tool for international overlanders but has solid U.S. coverage, especially for remote BLM sites that haven’t made it onto The Dyrt yet. It’s free, the data is GPS-pinned by users, and the comments often include road condition updates with dates. I use it as a cross-reference when I’m heading somewhere genuinely off the beaten path.
Campendium
Campendium is the strongest tool I’ve found for cell signal ratings at specific sites — something The Dyrt is still catching up on. If you’re working remotely from your rig, Campendium’s signal data broken down by carrier is worth checking before you commit to a week somewhere. Free and browser-based, though the mobile app is less polished than The Dyrt.
FreeRoam
FreeRoam overlays public land boundaries directly onto a map interface — BLM, USFS, state trust land, and private land at a glance. It’s the fastest way to answer “can I legally camp here?” without digging through government websites. Free, with an optional Pro tier for offline use.
Paper and Digital Government Maps You Shouldn’t Skip
Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs)
Every National Forest publishes Motor Vehicle Use Maps showing which roads are open to motorized vehicles, what vehicle classes are permitted, and seasonal closures. Free PDFs on the USFS website, and they’re the authoritative source — not a third-party app. I download the relevant MVUMs for any Forest I’m heading into and keep them on my phone and tablet.
The maps update annually and show road designations that apps routinely lag on. A road that shows as passable on a crowdsourced app might have been reclassified as non-motorized in the last MVUM update. Takes five minutes to check. Do it.
BLM’s GeoBOB and Recreation.gov
BLM’s GeoBOB (Geographic Boundaries of BLM-Managed Lands) is a GIS layer you can pull into mapping software. More useful for trip planning on a laptop than in the field. Recreation.gov handles reservations for the BLM sites that do require them — mostly in high-demand areas like the Alabama Hills in California or popular Utah corridors.
Dedicated GPS Devices for Serious Boondockers
Your phone is not a GPS device. It’s a GPS-capable device that depends on cell signal for map data, drains battery fast, and fails in extreme cold. If you’re regularly pushing into remote terrain, you need a dedicated unit.
The Garmin RV 890 is the right call for RV-specific navigation. It has preloaded routing that accounts for your rig’s height, weight, and length — so it won’t send you under a 12-foot bridge with a 13-foot rig. The 8-inch display reads in direct sunlight, and it accepts custom POI files, which means you can load downloaded boondocking waypoints directly onto the device.
For foot-and-scout missions when you’re checking out a site before committing the rig, I carry a Garmin inReach Mini 2. Two-way satellite messaging, SOS capability, and GPS tracking that works anywhere on the planet. At 3.5 oz dry weight it disappears in a pocket. When you’re 40 miles from the nearest cell tower, this is the device that gets you help if something goes wrong.

Community Resources That Beat Any Algorithm
Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome
These aren’t free camping, but they’re cheap and often better than anything you’d find on BLM land if you want amenities nearby. Harvest Hosts ($99/year) gets you access to wineries, breweries, farms, and attractions that let self-contained RVs park overnight for free. Boondockers Welcome ($30/year) connects you with RV owners who let fellow travelers park in their driveway. Both memberships pay for themselves fast if you travel more than a few weeks a year.
Reddit and Facebook Groups
r/boondocking and r/vandwellers are worth checking for current conditions. People post real-time updates about road closures, ranger enforcement patterns, and newly discovered sites. The signal-to-noise ratio is decent if you search before posting. Facebook groups like “BLM Boondocking” and region-specific groups — Arizona Boondocking, Pacific Northwest Free Camping — often have pinned resources and members who’ve been working the same areas for years.
Don’t share exact GPS coordinates publicly in these groups. The boondocking community has an unwritten rule about this. Posting precise locations to large public groups accelerates overuse and invites the trash and fire ring proliferation that gets areas closed. Share in DMs with people you’ve vetted.
Camphost and Ranger Conversations
This is the most underused resource in boondocking. When I pull into a developed campground for a night of hookups before heading out, I always talk to the camp host or a ranger. They know which dispersed areas are currently accessible, which roads got washed out last month, and where enforcement priorities are sitting. A five-minute conversation has redirected me to better sites more times than I can count.
Vetting a Site Before You Commit
Google Earth Pro (Free)
Google Earth Pro is free and it’s one of the most useful pre-trip tools I’ve found. Pull up your target coordinates, switch to historical imagery, and you can see what the road and site looked like across multiple years. I look for evidence of regular use — worn pull-through areas, existing fire rings visible from satellite — road surface quality, and whether the site sits in a drainage that could flood. Ten minutes of recon. Do it before every new site.
Satellite Imagery in Gaia GPS
Gaia GPS ($39.99/year) lets you overlay satellite imagery with USGS topo maps, public land boundaries, and road classifications simultaneously. It’s the best offline mapping tool I’ve used for both pre-trip planning and in-field navigation. The ability to download high-resolution tiles for offline use matters when you’re heading into areas with no cell coverage — which is most of the places worth going.
I load target sites into Gaia before every trip, download the surrounding 20-mile radius for offline use, and mark waypoints for the site, the nearest water source, and the nearest paved road. Fifteen minutes of prep work. It eliminates a lot of ugly surprises.
Practical Gear That Makes Remote Sites Work
Finding the site is half the equation. Staying comfortable off-grid for multiple days requires the right support gear.
A quality portable solar setup is the difference between a two-night stay and a two-week stay. Building Your Own Site Database
After a few seasons of boondocking, your personal intel beats any app. I keep a running spreadsheet with GPS coordinates, road surface notes, cell carrier performance, water source locations, and the date of my last visit. I track seasonal access windows too — a lot of high-elevation BLM land in Colorado and Utah is snowed in from November through May, and that’s worth knowing before you plan a March trip.
Export your Gaia or Garmin waypoints periodically and back them up somewhere off-device. I’ve had phones die in the field and lost weeks of saved locations. Your personal database is hard-won. Protect it.
The Short Version

- Cross-reference with iOverlander and Campendium — especially for signal data and sites too remote for The Dyrt’s coverage.
- Download official MVUMs and BLM field office maps before every trip. Apps lag on road reclassifications. Government PDFs don’t.
- Run Google Earth Pro and Gaia GPS recon on any new site before you drive to it. Fifteen minutes of satellite work prevents bad decisions.
- Carry a dedicated GPS unit and a Garmin inReach when you’re going genuinely remote. Your phone is not a backup plan.
- Talk to rangers and camp hosts. They know things no app does.
- Don’t post exact coordinates publicly. Ever.
The best boondocking spots aren’t hidden. They’re just sitting on public land that most RVers don’t bother to research. Put in the pre-trip work and you’ll camp in places that feel like they’re yours alone.
