What to Wear Kayaking in Cold Water: Layering & Drysuit Strategy

Cold water kills faster than cold air. If you’re paddling in water below 60°F, your clothing system isn’t about comfort — it’s about surviving an unplanned swim. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

I’ve paddled everything from 38°F snowmelt rivers in the Rockies in April to 55°F coastal water off Maine in October. The gear decisions you make before you launch are the ones that keep you alive if your boat goes over.

Why 60°F Is the Line

Cold water shock hits immediately at immersion. Below 60°F, your body triggers an involuntary gasp reflex, your heart rate spikes, and your swimming ability degrades within minutes. At 50°F, you’ve got roughly 30-60 minutes before incapacitation. At 40°F, that window shrinks to under 30 minutes.

The U.S. Coast Guard and American Canoe Association both use 60°F as the threshold where a wetsuit becomes minimum acceptable protection and a drysuit becomes the smart call. In my experience, 60°F is where you start taking this seriously. Anything below 50°F is drysuit territory.

The Two Systems: Wetsuit vs. Drysuit

You’ve got two primary options for cold water protection, and they work on completely different principles. Understanding the difference matters before you spend money.

Wetsuits: How They Actually Work

A wetsuit traps a thin layer of water against your skin. Your body heats that water, and the neoprene insulation slows heat loss. The catch: it only works if the fit is tight enough to limit water flushing. A loose wetsuit is nearly useless in moving water where cold water constantly cycles through.

For kayaking, you want a farmer john style — sleeveless torso coverage with full leg coverage — paired with a paddle jacket on top. This gives you arm mobility while protecting your core. Wetsuits have a hard ceiling. Once water temperature drops below 50°F, even a well-fitted 3mm wetsuit doesn’t give you enough thermal protection for extended paddling. You’re also wet the entire time — just cold more slowly. For day trips in mild cold water, wetsuits are fine. Below 50°F, move to a drysuit.

Drysuits: The Real System

A drysuit seals at the wrists, neck, and ankles (or feet, on a suit with integrated socks) using latex or neoprene gaskets. You stay completely dry. The suit itself provides almost zero insulation — it’s a waterproof shell. All your warmth comes from the layers underneath.

This is the system I run from November through April on Pacific Northwest coastal paddles and early-season river work. It’s more expensive upfront, but the thermal flexibility is unmatched. You dial warmth up or down by adjusting underlayers without changing your outer protection.

The entry point for a quality kayaking drysuit is around $600-700. The Kokatat Meridian Touring Drysuit sits at the top of what I’d recommend for most paddlers — Gore-Tex Pro fabric, relief zipper, integrated socks, gaskets that last if you maintain them. It’s a $900+ investment, but I’ve seen Kokatat drysuits run 10-15 years with proper care. Better cost-per-use than two or three mid-range wetsuits.

If budget is the constraint, the Stohlquist Amp Drysuit comes in around $600 and uses a 4-layer laminate fabric that holds up well. I’ve put two seasons of lake and coastal paddling on it. Not Gore-Tex, but it breathes adequately and the gaskets are solid.

Building Your Drysuit Underlayer System

Buy a drysuit and wear a cotton t-shirt underneath because it’s a warm day. Then swim. The drysuit does its job, but you’re still cold because cotton holds zero insulating value when compressed against your skin. I’ve watched paddlers make this mistake on guided trips. Don’t be that person.

Every layer under a drysuit needs to be synthetic or wool.

Base Layer: Moisture Management First

Your base layer moves sweat away from your skin. Paddling is aerobic work — you will sweat even in cold conditions. Moisture sitting against your skin bleeds heat fast.

I run the Patagonia Capilene Midweight Crew as my base layer in most conditions. It’s 100% recycled polyester, dries fast, and doesn’t hold odor the way cheaper synthetics do. For water below 45°F, I step up to the Smartwool Merino 250 Crew — better warmth-to-weight and stays comfortable even when damp from sweat buildup during a long paddle.

Mid Layer: Insulation That Moves

Under a drysuit, you want insulation that compresses well, doesn’t restrict shoulder rotation, and holds warmth when slightly damp. Fleece wins over down here. Down loses nearly all insulating value when wet, and even inside a drysuit, sweat accumulates over a long day.

The Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover is the mid layer I’ve come back to for six years of cold water paddling. Grid fleece construction at 4.4 oz/yd² — breathes well under a drysuit and doesn’t create the bulk that wrecks your paddle stroke. For water below 45°F on extended paddles, I add a second mid layer — typically the Patagonia Nano Puff. Synthetic insulation under a drysuit compresses well, adds 2-3°F of effective warmth, and doesn’t bulk out your gasket seals at the wrists.

Temperature-Based Layering Quick Reference

  • 55-60°F water: Farmer john wetsuit + paddle jacket. Thin synthetic base layer underneath.
  • 50-55°F water: Drysuit + lightweight synthetic base layer + light fleece mid layer.
  • 45-50°F water: Drysuit + merino base layer + R1-weight fleece mid layer.
  • 40-45°F water: Drysuit + merino base layer + R2-weight fleece + lightweight synthetic insulator.
  • Below 40°F water: Drysuit + full merino base layer + heavyweight fleece + synthetic insulator. Drysuit with integrated socks and neoprene hood.

Paddle Jacket: The Wetsuit Paddler’s Outer Layer

If you’re running a wetsuit system, your paddle jacket is doing critical work. It needs to block wind, shed water, and seal at the wrists and waist to minimize water flushing when you swim.

The NRS Endurance Splash Jacket is the benchmark at around $150. It’s not a drysuit — it’s a splash jacket — but it has latex wrist gaskets and a neoprene waist tunnel that seals against your spray skirt. I’ve worn this over a farmer john in 55°F water on the Deschutes River and stayed functional through two wet exits without getting dangerously cold.

Don’t confuse a paddle jacket with a rain jacket. A standard hardshell has no wrist seals and will funnel cold water up your arms the moment you capsize. In sub-60°F water, that’s a dangerous mistake.

Accessories That Actually Matter

Hands: Neoprene Pogies vs. Gloves

Pogies are superior for paddling performance. Your bare hands grip the paddle directly, giving you full tactile feedback and dexterity. Gasket Maintenance: The Part Everyone Skips

A drysuit is only as good as its gaskets. Latex gaskets — standard on most quality drysuits — degrade with UV exposure, ozone, and improper storage. A cracked gasket on a Kokatat drysuit is a $50-80 repair. A failed gasket in 40°F water is a survival situation.

After every paddle, rinse your gaskets with fresh water and let them dry away from direct sunlight. Every 3-4 months, treat them with 303 Aerospace Protectant — a UV protectant that extends gasket life significantly. I’ve gotten 5-6 years out of latex gaskets with this routine. Skip it and you’re replacing them annually.

Store your drysuit hanging or loosely rolled, never folded at the gaskets. Fold lines in latex create stress fractures over time. This is the single most common way paddlers destroy a $900 suit.

The Budget Reality

A full drysuit system — suit, base layer, mid layer, pogies, neoprene socks — runs $800-1,200 when you buy quality. If you’re paddling cold water more than 5-6 times a year, a drysuit pays for itself in safety margin and comfort within two seasons. If you’re an occasional paddler in marginal conditions, a quality farmer john wetsuit with a good paddle jacket is a reasonable $250-300 system that covers the 55-65°F range effectively.

What I won’t recommend is the middle ground: cheap drysuits with poor gaskets and inadequate fabric. A $300 “drysuit” from an unknown brand that leaks at the seams after one season isn’t a drysuit — it’s a false sense of security. Spend the money on Kokatat, Stohlquist, or NRS, or stick with a wetsuit system you can trust.

Practice the Swim Before You Need It

A drysuit buys you time in the water. That time is only useful if you’ve already practiced wet exits and self-rescue in controlled conditions. Every cold-water paddler I respect has deliberately gotten in the water on a warm day to test their gear before trusting it in serious conditions. Your clothing system and your skills have to work together — one without the other is incomplete.

Get in the water on purpose before the water gets you by accident.
