Kayaking in Cold Water: Gear, Safety & Hypothermia Prevention

Cold water kills faster than almost anything else in the outdoors — and most paddlers are underprepared for it. The rule that matters: dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. If you’re paddling water below 60°F in a t-shirt because it’s 75°F and sunny on the bank, you’re one capsize away from a serious emergency.

I’ve paddled year-round for 15 years, including winter runs on the Green River in Utah where water temps hover around 45°F and spring trips on Lake Superior where the surface rarely climbs above 50°F even in June. The gear and protocols below are what I run when the water is cold enough to kill.

The Temperature Thresholds You Need to Know

Water pulls heat from your body 25 times faster than air at the same temperature. That’s physics, and it’s why the “60/60 rule” exists as a baseline: if the combined air and water temperature is below 120°F, you’re in cold-water territory and need immersion protection.

Here’s how I break it down by water temp:

  • Below 40°F: Cold shock is nearly instantaneous on immersion. Swim failure can occur within 3–5 minutes. Drysuit is non-negotiable.
  • 40–50°F: You’ve got maybe 10–15 minutes of meaningful swimming ability before your arms stop working. Drysuit strongly recommended; a well-configured wetsuit is the minimum.
  • 50–60°F: This range kills more paddlers than any other because people underestimate it. A 5mm wetsuit or drysuit is appropriate here.
  • 60–70°F: Wetsuit territory. You have more time, but hypothermia is still a real threat if you’re in the water for more than 20–30 minutes.
  • Above 70°F: Standard paddling gear is generally acceptable, though a wetsuit is still smart for whitewater or remote flatwater.

Check water temperature before every trip. The USGS National Water Information System has real-time gauge data for most rivers in the country. For coastal and lake paddling, NOAA’s buoy data is your friend. Don’t guess.

Drysuits: The Right Call for Serious Cold

A drysuit keeps water out entirely. You wear insulating layers underneath and stay dry even after a full swim. For water below 50°F, I won’t paddle without one — and I’d say the same for anything below 55°F if you’re more than a half-mile from shore or running moving water.

The Kokatat GORE-TEX Meridian Drysuit is the benchmark for kayaking drysuits. GORE-TEX Pro fabric, a relief zipper (which matters on a full-day paddle more than most people expect until they’ve needed it), and latex gaskets at the neck and wrists that form a genuine waterproof seal. If the Kokatat’s price is a stretch, the NRS Extreme Drysuit is a legitimate alternative. NRS’s own 4-layer fabric, front entry zipper, and replaceable gaskets — that last feature matters because gaskets are the first thing that degrades on any drysuit. I’ve watched paddlers get three to four extra years out of a suit by swapping gaskets at home with a $30 kit.

One thing to understand about drysuits: they don’t insulate on their own. They’re a waterproof shell. The warmth comes from what you wear underneath.

Layering Under a Drysuit

In water below 45°F, I run a midweight merino wool base layer, a synthetic insulating mid layer, and the drysuit over top. Wool stays warm when damp from sweat; synthetic dries faster. I don’t use down under a drysuit — if the suit floods or you’re sweating hard on a long carry, down collapses and loses all insulating value.

Over that, I run a Patagonia R2 TechFace Fleece or similar 200-weight fleece. It compresses well, moves with you, and dries fast enough that if you do take on water, you’re not stuck in a soaked insulator for hours.

Don’t skip your feet and hands. Latex drysuit socks keep your feet dry, but you still need insulation — I wear a thin wool sock liner inside the drysuit sock, then neoprene booties over the outside. For hands, I use NRS Maverick Gloves in 3mm neoprene down to about 45°F, and switch to the NRS Boundary Mitts below that. Dexterity matters for paddle grip and self-rescue, so don’t go thicker than you need to.

Wetsuits: When They Work and When They Don’t

A wetsuit traps a thin layer of water against your skin, which your body heats and which then insulates you. It works — but only if it fits properly. A wetsuit that’s too loose flushes constantly and provides almost no thermal protection.

For kayaking, go with a farmer john style wetsuit rather than a full suit. It keeps your core and legs covered while giving your arms full range of motion for paddling. For colder water — 50°F and below — step up to a 5mm full wetsuit at minimum. But at that point you’re better served by a drysuit. A 5mm wetsuit is bulky, restricts movement, and still leaves you vulnerable if you’re in the water for more than 15–20 minutes. The drysuit investment pays for itself the first time you actually need it.

PFD Selection for Cold Water

Your PFD does double duty in cold water: it keeps you afloat and adds a meaningful layer of insulation around your core. A thin racing PFD is the wrong call when temps drop. You want a full-foam vest-style PFD with at least 15.7 lbs of buoyancy.

The Stohlquist Fisherman PFD is what I keep in my cold-water kit. Coast Guard Type III approved, 16.5 lbs of buoyancy, and foam panels that cover your sides and back — which matters for insulation, not just flotation. Emergency Protocols: What to Do When You’re In the Water

Cold shock is the first threat. When you hit cold water, your body triggers an involuntary gasp reflex and hyperventilation. This lasts 1–3 minutes and is when most drownings happen — not from hypothermia, but from inhaling water during that initial gasp. Keep your airway above water and focus on controlled breathing. It passes.

After cold shock, you’ve got a window of swimming ability — roughly 10 minutes in 50°F water before your hands and arms lose meaningful function. Use that window to get back to your boat or get to shore. Don’t waste it.

If you can’t self-rescue, assume the HELP position (Heat Escape Lessening Posture): knees drawn to your chest, arms crossed over your PFD. It reduces heat loss from your core by roughly 50% compared to treading water. If there are multiple people in the water, huddle together — body heat adds up.

Every cold-water paddler should carry a Fox 40 Whistle clipped to their PFD. It’s audible over 100 yards in wind and costs $8. I also carry a SOL Escape Bivvy in my day hatch — 3.8 oz dry weight, and it raises your core temperature fast once you’re out of the water. A paddling partner of mine was borderline hypothermic after a swim on a spring trip in Maine. The bivvy bought us the 40 minutes we needed to get him stable before we could get off the water.

Common Misconceptions About Cold-Water Paddling

“I’m a strong swimmer, so I’ll be fine.” Swimming ability is irrelevant in water below 50°F. Cold incapacitation is involuntary — your muscles stop working regardless of your fitness level. The strongest open-water swimmer in the world can’t fight neuromuscular shutdown.

“I’ll just stay close to shore.” Shore doesn’t help you if you can’t swim to it. In 45°F water, meaningful swim failure can happen in under 10 minutes. If you’re 200 yards out and you capsize, that’s a long way when your arms quit at the 8-minute mark.

“My wetsuit is fine for this.” Only if it fits correctly, is the right thickness for the water temperature, and you’re not planning to be in the water for more than 15–20 minutes. Most recreational paddlers’ wetsuits are too thin, too loose, or both.

“I’ll warm up fast once I’m out of the water.” Afterdrop is real. Your core temperature continues to drop for 30–60 minutes after you exit cold water as cold blood from your extremities circulates back to your core. Get into dry insulating layers immediately, get out of the wind, and don’t assume you’re safe just because you’re on shore.

Trip Planning for Cold Conditions

File a float plan with someone onshore before every cold-water trip. Include your put-in, take-out, expected return time, and the number of people in your group. If you’re not back by a set time, they call search and rescue. It takes five minutes and it’s the single highest-value safety habit in paddling.

Paddle with a partner whenever possible. Solo cold-water paddling is a calculated risk that even experienced paddlers should think hard about. If you do paddle solo, stay on water where you can self-rescue quickly and keep your trips short.

Check weather windows carefully. Wind chill accelerates heat loss once you’re wet, and conditions change fast on open water. I use the Windy app for paddling forecasts — wind speed, wave height, and precipitation overlaid on a map, which is more useful than a standard weather app for on-water planning.

The Bottom Line

Winter and shoulder-season paddling means empty rivers and quiet lakes. It’s worth doing. But it demands honest gear.
