The Case Against PLBs: What You Give Up

SPOT X

It runs on the Globalstar network instead of Iridium, and that’s the detail that matters — Globalstar has historically had coverage gaps at extreme latitudes and in mountainous terrain compared to Iridium’s global mesh.

I don’t recommend this for serious wilderness travel in remote ranges — Alaska, northern Canada, deep in the Rockies — where you need guaranteed coverage. Fine as car-camping backup or moderate backcountry use in the lower 48 away from satellite dead zones.

Coverage: Iridium vs. Globalstar, and Why It Matters

This spec gets glossed over in most gear reviews. Iridium runs 66 satellites in a true polar-orbiting constellation — genuinely global coverage, including the poles, deep ocean, and high mountain terrain. Globalstar’s coverage weakens at high latitudes and in rugged terrain because of how its satellites orbit.

If your trips stay in the continental U.S. at moderate elevations, this won’t bite you. If you’re planning Alaska, Patagonia, high-altitude Himalayan approaches, or anything above 60 degrees latitude, go Iridium — Garmin inReach devices, or a PLB (Cospas-Sarsat is satellite-independent and works everywhere by design).

Honest math: if you go out four or five times a year for weekend trips and want the safety net, a PLB gets you 95% of the actual safety benefit for a fraction of the cost. If you’re out weekly and want to text your family, track location in real time, and pull weather updates in the field, the inReach subscription earns its cost.

Real Rescue Scenarios: Which Device Actually Helps

Scenario one: Solo hiker breaks a leg on exposed scree, can’t move, no cell signal. Both a PLB and an inReach solve this identically — press SOS, satellites relay your GPS position, SAR gets dispatched. The inReach adds value because you can text SAR details about your injury while you wait, which helps them plan the extraction. A PLB just says “emergency, here’s the location” with zero context.

Scenario two: A backpacking party gets weathered in above treeline, no injury, but they’re now two days behind schedule and families are worried. A PLB is useless here — this isn’t an SOS situation. An inReach lets you send “Delayed by weather, safe, out Thursday,” and that message alone prevents an unnecessary SAR callout.

Scenario three: A hunter in a remote Alaska drainage needs to check an incoming storm before deciding whether to push for the truck or hole up. Only a satellite messenger with weather requests handles this. A PLB has no such feature, and this isn’t remotely an emergency case.

Weekend warrior, day hikes and short overnights a handful of times a year, tight budget: get the ACR ResQLink View. Pay once, forget about it, know it works.

Regular backcountry traveler — backpacking, hunting, paddling multiple trips a year, want two-way contact with family: the Garmin inReach Mini 2 is worth the subscription. It’s the device I personally carry on 90% of my trips.

Budget-conscious but still want texting without the full navigation suite: Garmin inReach Messenger gets you there for less upfront cash.

Serious backcountry skier, hunter, or expedition traveler who wants a standalone GPS and communicator in one device: the Garmin inReach Explorer+ earns its weight and price.

Whatever you land on, register it, test the SOS function before you leave the trailhead, and tell someone at home exactly what device you’re carrying and how it works. I’ve seen too many people buy the right gear and never learn how to use it under pressure. That’s the actual failure point, not the hardware.
