How to Tune Ski Edges at Home: File Selection, Angle & Technique

You can tune your own ski edges for less than the cost of two shop tunes. After your third or fourth pass, you’ll do better work than half the mall shops out there. I started tuning my own after a shop in Summit County left a burr in my edge that put me on my ass on a firm morning at Vail. Never again. Here’s exactly how I do it.

What You Actually Need to Get Started

Skip the 40-piece kits with tools you’ll never touch. You need a tuning bench or vise, a diamond stone or gummy stone, a file guide set at 2-3 angles, quality files, and a base cleaner or citrus solvent. That’s it.

Side Edge vs. Base Edge

Every ski edge has two angles: the side edge (the vertical face) and the base edge (the bevel under the ski). Those two numbers decide how the ski bites and lets go on hardpack.

Factory side edge angle usually runs 88-90 degrees. For most recreational skiers on groomed terrain, I dial in a 2-degree base bevel and an 87-degree side edge — total edge angle of 87, which holds solid without feeling twitchy underfoot.

Racers and aggressive skiers who charge hardpack go steeper. I’ve tuned edges down to 85-86 degrees for guys ripping Aspen Highlands Bowl on firm mornings who want max bite. Go steeper than that and you’re fighting the ski in variable snow. Powder and all-mountain skiers should stick to 88-89 degrees — more forgiving, and the edges hold up longer between tunes.

Your file guide sets the angle for you. That’s the entire point of owning one. Freehand filing gets you a wavy edge that catches on one turn and skids the next.

The Actual Tuning Process

Clean the base first

Wipe the base with a citrus-based cleaner to strip old wax and grime. You want clean before metal touches it. Skip this and you’re grinding dirt into your file teeth, which dulls them fast.

Check for burrs and rust

Run a fingernail down the edge, tip to tail. Any snag is a burr. Hit it with a coarse diamond stone, then a fine one. Rust spots after a season in a damp garage come out the same way, before you file.

Set your file guide

Load the file into the guide at your chosen angle. I run 2-degree base bevel on everything I own. Lock it down tight — a loose guide is the number-one reason home tunes come out uneven.

File the base edge

Tip to tail, smooth single-direction strokes. Never saw back and forth; you’ll round the edge instead of sharpening it. Three to five passes handles most tunes unless you’re correcting a rock strike.

File the side edge

Switch to the side edge guide, set to 87-89 degrees depending on how you ski, same tip-to-tail motion. This is where most of your actual sharpness comes from.

Deburr and polish

Finish with a fine gummy stone or ceramic stone to knock off any microscopic burrs the file left. Skip this and the edge feels grabby on your first few turns.

Wax

Not edge work, but don’t skip it. A freshly tuned edge on a dry base runs sluggish. Hot wax, scrape, brush.

The Right File Makes or Breaks the Job

File quality matters more than people think. A cheap file dulls after two skis and starts dragging instead of cutting, which puts uneven pressure on the edge and creates low spots.

I use the Toko World Cup file for base work — Swiss-made, holds an edge through a full season across four pairs in my quiver. For side edges I run a shorter 6-inch file matched to my guide’s width. Longer files are harder to control at steep angles.

How Often Should You Tune?

Skiing 20-30 days a season on mixed conditions, I tune every 4-5 days on-snow, or whenever the ski starts skidding through turns it used to hold. East Coast skiers on firm, icy conditions should tune every 3 days — hardpack eats edges fast.

Powder-focused skiers out West can stretch to every 7-10 days since you’re not grinding against ice as much.

When to Skip DIY and See a Pro

Home tuning handles nearly everything, but a shop with a stone grinder earns its keep in a few specific cases:

  • Core shots or deep gouges from rock strikes — base repair needs P-tex work and often a grind you can’t replicate by hand.
  • Bent or delaminated edges after a hard impact — structural, not sharpness.
  • Full base flattening — after years of hand tuning, bases go concave or convex. A stone grind resets flat. I do this every 2-3 seasons on my daily driver skis.
  • Race prep — holding angles within a tenth of a degree across the full ski length, a machine grind beats hand filing every time.

For everything else — sharpening, deburring, minor maintenance — skip the shop. You need a vise, a guide, and 20 minutes per pair.

Final Verdict
