How to Fix a Flat Tire Roadside: Step-by-Step Field Guide
You fix a flat roadside in five moves: pull the wheel, get the tire off one bead, find and patch (or swap) the tube, reseat the tire, and pump it back to pressure. Total time with practice: under eight minutes. I’ve done this on the shoulder of Highway 550 outside Ouray in a hailstorm and in the parking lot of a gas station outside Moab at 6 a.m. The process doesn’t change. What changes is whether you’ve got the right tools in your saddle bag.
Most cyclists get flats and panic because they never practiced this at home. Do it once in your garage before you need to do it on a shoulder with cars doing 55 mph past your left ear. That’s the real fix.
What You Need Before You Hit the Road
Your flat kit lives in your saddle bag or jersey pocket, not in a drawer at home. Here’s what I run on every ride, from a 12-mile gravel loop to a 100-mile road century:
- Tire levers — plastic, not metal. Metal levers scratch rims and can pinch tubes.
- A spare tube matched to your tire size (700x25c, 700x32c, 29×2.2, whatever you run)
- A patch kit as backup, because two flats in one ride happens more than you’d think
- A pump or CO2 inflator — I carry both
- A multitool with a valve core remover if you run tubeless

Step 1: Get the Wheel Off the Bike
Flip your bike upside down or lean it against something stable, seat and handlebars down. For the rear wheel, shift into the smallest cog before you stop. This makes wheel removal way easier because the chain sits on the outermost gear.
Open the brake if you’re running rim brakes (flip the quick-release lever on your caliper). Open the wheel skewer or thru-axle. Pull the wheel free. If it’s the rear wheel, hold the derailleur back with your hand so the chain doesn’t tangle.
This step trips people up more than any other because they’ve never removed a wheel outside their garage. Practice this at home twice. It’s muscle memory after that.
Step 2: Break the Bead and Pull the Tube
Deflate the tube completely if there’s any air left — press the valve core or unscrew the presta lock nut. Push the tire bead away from the rim wall with your thumbs, working around the whole wheel. This “breaks” the bead seal.
Slide a tire lever under the bead, hook the other end on a spoke, and lever the bead up and over the rim edge. Slide a second lever a few inches away and repeat. Once you’ve got two levers in, run one around the circumference. The whole bead pops free on one side.
You don’t need to remove the tire completely from the rim. Just get one bead off, then reach in and pull the tube out. Leave the other bead seated. It saves time on reinstall.
Step 3: Find the Puncture
Inflate the tube slightly, enough to hold shape, not full pressure, and listen for hissing or run it past your lips (skin’s more sensitive to airflow than you’d think). If you can’t hear or feel it, submerge sections in water if you’ve got a bottle handy, or look for the tell-tale wet residue.
Check the tire casing where the tube failed. Run your finger along the inside of the tire, carefully, thorns and glass shards will happily open your fingertip too. Most flats come from a small puncture (glass, thorn, wire) or a pinch flat from underinflation, which shows up as two parallel slits, often called “snakebite.”
Pull the offending debris out of the tire casing before you put a new tube in, or you’ll be doing this again in a mile.
Patch or Replace: The Decision
Here’s my rule after 15 years of guiding trips: if you’ve got a spare tube, use it. Patching is a roadside backup, not your first move. Swapping a tube takes 90 seconds. Patching takes 5-10 minutes because the glue needs to set and cure before you can trust it under pressure.
Glueless patches (the peel-and-stick kind) are faster but less reliable long-term. I’ve had glueless patches fail at mile 40 after holding fine for the first 15. Use them to get home, then replace that tube entirely once you’re back at the shop or house.

Patching the Tube (If That’s Your Move)
Roughen the area around the puncture with the sandpaper included in your kit. This gives the patch something to grip. Apply a thin, even layer of vulcanizing cement if you’re using a traditional kit, and let it get tacky (about 3-5 minutes) before pressing the patch on. Rushing this step is the #1 reason patches fail.
Press the patch firmly, hold for 30 seconds, then peel back the cellophane backing (leave the foil backing, it stays on). Dust with a bit of talc or chalk if you’ve got it, to keep the patch from sticking to the tire casing.
Installing a New Tube
Partially inflate the new tube, just enough to give it shape, no more. A flat tube is hard to seat evenly and increases your risk of pinching it under the tire bead during reinstall.
Insert the valve stem through the rim hole first, then tuck the rest of the tube up into the tire casing, working around the wheel. Keep it loose and slightly slack. Don’t stretch it tight.
Reinstalling the Tire
Starting opposite the valve stem, push the tire bead back over the rim wall using your thumbs. Work in both directions toward the valve. The last 6-8 inches near the valve stem are always the tightest. This is where most people reach for tire levers again, but don’t. Levers here risk pinching the new tube and giving you a second flat before you’ve even left the shoulder.
Instead, push the valve stem up into the tire slightly to create slack, then use your thumbs and the heel of your palm to roll the bead over. If you’re really stuck, use a lever very gently, sliding it flat against the rim to avoid pinching.
Reseating and Inflating
Before you pump to full pressure, check that the tube isn’t pinched between the tire and rim anywhere. Squeeze the tire at a few points around the circumference. You should feel even tube thickness, no bulges or pinches.
Inflate slowly, checking that the tire bead seats evenly into the rim. You’ll see a molded line just above the rim wall, and it should be consistent all the way around. If one section lags, deflate slightly and reseat before continuing.
Road tires run 80-120 psi depending on your rider weight and tire width, check the sidewall for the printed range. Gravel and mountain tires run much lower, 25-45 psi, for grip and comfort.
This is where a real pump matters. A cheap mini-pump that takes 200 strokes to hit 80 psi is a miserable way to end a ride. I run the Topeak Road Morph G for road rides. It’s got a fold-out foot peg and gauge, and gets me to 100 psi in under 90 seconds. For weight-conscious setups, I switch to Lezyne CO2 inflators with 16g cartridges, full pressure in about 10 seconds, though you only get one or two shots per ride depending on cartridge size.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Tire won’t hold air after reinstall
Almost always a pinched tube from installation. Deflate, check the full circumference for pinch marks, and reseat.
Sidewall cut or gash
A tube alone won’t fix this. The tube will just bulge through the cut and blow again under pressure. Boot it with a tire boot, a folded dollar bill, or an energy bar wrapper as an emergency fix to get you home. Valve stem leaking
Presta valves have a small lock nut, check it’s tightened. If air’s escaping from the base where the stem meets the tube, that tube’s junk. Don’t bother patching a valve stem failure.
Repeated flats in the same spot on the rim
Check your rim tape. A shifted or worn rim strip exposes spoke holes, which will chew through tubes fast. Replace the rim tape, not just the tube.
CO2 cartridge doesn’t fully inflate the tire
16g cartridges max out around 100-110 psi in road tires. If you’re running wider tires or higher pressure, carry a 20g cartridge or plan to top off with a hand pump once you’re home.
