Stiffness matters because a flexy sole wastes watts and concentrates pressure under the metatarsal heads, which is where hot spots start. Carbon soles rated 10-12 on the manufacturer stiffness index (Shimano and Specialized both use a 1-12 scale) spread load across the whole foot instead of letting it pool under the ball. I’ve run soft nylon-soled shoes on 100-mile days and my feet were numb by mile 60. Never again.

Arch support is personal and non-negotiable. If the stock footbed doesn’t match your arch height, no amount of break-in time fixes it. This is where most riders overspend on a $400 shoe and then ignore the $40 insole upgrade that would’ve solved their actual problem.

Heel retention keeps your foot locked in the heel cup so you’re not burning energy fighting slip with every stroke. A shoe with a loose heel feels fine for an hour. By hour four, you’ll have a blister the size of a dime and you’ll know exactly why.

The carbon sole rates a 12 out of 12 on Shimano’s stiffness index, as rigid as anything on the market. Power transfer is immediate. There’s zero flex, which some riders find harsh on rough chipseal, but on smooth tarmac over long miles it means every watt goes to the pedal instead of getting absorbed by the shoe.

The heel cup uses a suede-like liner that grips without any break-in period. I wore mine out of the box on a 60-mile ride and had zero hot spots, which almost never happens with a stiff race shoe. Fit runs true to size, maybe a half-size small if you’ve got a wide forefoot.
