How to Winterize a Boat Engine: Complete Step-by-Step Guide for All Motor Types
Skip winterization and you’re gambling with a cracked block, corroded cylinders, or a fuel system full of varnish come spring. I’ve seen $30,000 outboards turned into scrap because someone figured “it’s just a few months.” It’s not worth the risk. Here’s the exact process I run on my own boats every October, broken down by engine type.
This isn’t a 20-minute job you knock out before happy hour. Budget two to three hours per engine if you’re doing it right, longer if you’ve never pulled a lower unit plug before. Do it once with a checklist and you’ll cut that time in half next year.
Why Winterization Actually Matters
Water expands roughly 9% when it freezes. Any water left sitting in your engine block, exhaust manifolds, or raw water cooling system becomes a wedge that cracks cast iron and aluminum alike. I’ve replaced two manifolds on a customer’s inboard because he skipped winterization one season in Wisconsin. That was a $1,200 mistake a $40 bottle of antifreeze would’ve prevented.
Ethanol-blended fuel is the other silent killer. Modern gas absorbs moisture over time, and that moisture separates out and turns into a gummy varnish that clogs carburetors and injectors. Combine stale fuel with a frozen cooling system and you’re looking at a full rebuild instead of a spring startup.
Gear You’ll Need Before You Start
Don’t start this job halfway through and realize you’re missing antifreeze at 4pm on a Saturday. Stage everything first.
- Marine-safe propylene glycol antifreeze (not the automotive stuff, that’s toxic to the environment and your engine seals)
- Fuel stabilizer rated for ethanol blends

Winterizing an Outboard Engine

Step 1: Run the Engine on Muffs
Hook up flush muffs to a garden hose and run the engine at idle for 10 minutes. This flushes out salt, sand, and debris from the raw water cooling passages. If you boat in saltwater, this step isn’t optional. I’ve cut open cooling jackets with a quarter-inch of calcium buildup from owners who skipped flushing for two seasons straight.
Step 2: Fog the Cylinders

Step 3: Change the Gear Oil
Drain the lower unit gear oil into a clear container and check it. Milky or foamy oil means water intrusion, usually a bad prop seal, and you need to fix that before storage, not after. Clean gear oil should run out honey-colored, not gray.
Refill with fresh gear oil from the bottom vent hole until it flows out the top, then seal both plugs. Don’t skip this. Water sitting in the lower unit over winter destroys bearings and gears by spring.
Step 4: Stabilize the Fuel
Fill the tank to about 95% capacity. That leaves room for expansion but minimizes the air space where condensation forms. Add fuel stabilizer at the recommended ratio, typically 1oz per 2.5 gallons, and run the engine for another 10 minutes on muffs so the treated fuel circulates through the entire fuel system, not just the tank.

Step 5: Grease and Store

Winterizing an Inboard Gas Engine
Inboards need more attention because the entire block and manifolds hold water. There’s no self-draining design like outboards.
Step 1: Change Oil and Filter While Warm
Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature, then change the oil and filter immediately. Warm oil carries more contaminants and moisture out with it than cold oil does. Draining cold leaves acids and sludge sitting in the pan all winter.
Step 2: Drain the Raw Water System
Locate every petcock and drain plug on the block, manifolds, and heat exchanger. This is where people cut corners and pay for it in April. I keep a printed diagram from my engine’s service manual taped inside my engine hatch cover specifically because there are usually 6-8 drain points and it’s easy to miss one hiding behind a hose clamp.
Once drained, close all petcocks and prepare to add antifreeze.
Step 3: Circulate Antifreeze

Start the engine and let it draw antifreeze through the entire cooling system until you see pink or blue fluid coming out the exhaust. Step 4: Fog and Stabilize
Same as the outboard process: fog the cylinders through the carburetor while the engine’s still running on antifreeze, then let it stall out. Stabilize the fuel in the tank at 1oz per 2.5 gallons, same ratio as the outboard.
Step 5: Protect the Battery
Disconnect the battery and store it somewhere temperature-stable, a garage, not the boat itself. Trickle charge it monthly if you can, or use a battery tender left connected all winter. Dead batteries left in a cold hull by March are one of the most common spring startup failures I run into.
Winterizing a Diesel Engine
Diesels are more forgiving on the fuel side, no ethanol issues, but the cooling system and glow plug maintenance still demand attention.
Step 1: Change Fuel Filters
Replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters before storage, not after. Diesel fuel that sits over winter can develop algae growth (yes, algae, in fuel) especially if there’s any water contamination. Fresh filters going into spring prevent a clogged fuel system on your first start.
Step 2: Add Biocide to the Fuel Tank
Unlike gas engines where stabilizer is the main additive, diesel tanks benefit from a biocide treatment to kill microbial growth. Combine this with a stabilizer for full protection. I’ve had good results layering both in tanks that sit for 4+ months.
Step 3: Drain and Refill Raw Water Cooling
Same process as the gas inboard: drain the raw water side completely, then circulate antifreeze through via muffs or a bucket-and-hose setup until it exits the exhaust discernibly colored. Diesel engines run hotter and have larger cooling capacity, so budget more antifreeze than you think you’ll need. I typically use 2-3 gallons on a mid-size diesel versus 1-1.5 on a comparable gas inboard.
Step 4: Change Engine Oil
Diesel oil breaks down faster under combustion byproducts than gas engine oil, so this step matters even more here. Run the engine to operating temp, then drain and replace with fresh oil and a new filter.
Step 5: Fog the Intake (If Applicable)
Not all diesels need fogging. Check your manual, since some naturally aspirated diesels don’t require it the way gas engines do. If yours calls for it, follow the same fogging process through the air intake while running.
Storage: Don’t Skip the Cover
All that engine work means nothing if you let snow and ice sit directly on your boat all winter. A proper cover keeps moisture out of the cockpit, prevents UV degradation on your upholstery, and stops critters from nesting in your engine compartment.
