How to Set Up a Tent in the Rain: Step-by-Step Technique and Gear Tips

Rainfly goes up first. Everything else waits. I’ve been running that rule since my second season guiding in the Cascades and I’ve never had a wet tent interior from setup — only from forgetting it.

Setting up in rain isn’t complicated. It’s a sequence problem. Get the sequence wrong and you’re sleeping in a damp bag wondering what happened. Get it right and you’re dry inside while the storm works on the fly.

Site Selection: Do This Before You Touch Your Pack

Spend two minutes picking the right spot and you’ll save yourself hours of misery. Look for slightly elevated, flat ground — not a depression, not the bottom of a slope. Water flows downhill and pools in low spots. I’ve watched campers set up beautiful tents directly in what became a 2-inch-deep puddle by midnight.

Check overhead for widow-makers — dead branches that high wind and rain can knock loose. Look for natural windbreaks like dense tree lines or rock formations on your weather side. In a sustained storm, a good windbreak cuts the effective rain impact on your fly by more than half.

Avoid pitching directly under a tree canopy if you can. Trees drip long after rain stops, and that constant drip-drip on your fly will keep you awake and accelerate condensation buildup inside. A few feet of clearance makes a real difference.

Gear Prep: What to Do Before the Trip, Not During the Storm

If you’re reading this from a trailhead parking lot while it’s already raining, skip ahead. If you’re planning ahead — and you should be — there are two things worth doing before you leave home.

Re-seam-seal your tent. Factory seam sealing degrades faster than most people expect. I re-apply Gear Aid Seam Grip to every tent I own at the start of each season. Takes 20 minutes, dries overnight, and it’s the difference between a dry floor and a wet one. Pay extra attention to the floor corners and the rainfly seams near the zipper.

Know your tent’s pitch sequence cold before you’re doing it in the dark in a downpour. Set it up in your backyard. Time yourself. I’m serious — muscle memory matters when your hands are cold and your headlamp is fogging up.

The Rainfly-First Technique: Step by Step

MSR’s instructions, Big Agnes’s instructions, Nemo’s instructions — they all tell you to pitch the body first, then throw the fly over it. Fine in dry conditions. In rain, you’ve soaked your tent interior before you’ve even unrolled your sleeping pad. Here’s the sequence that actually works.

Step 1: Stake Your Footprint

Lay your ground cloth or footprint first and stake two corners on the windward side. This anchors your workspace and keeps the footprint from blowing around while you work. If your tent came with a custom footprint, use it — it’s worth the extra ounces. If not, a lightweight silnylon tarp cut to size works fine.

Step 2: Assemble Your Poles Under the Fly

Pull your poles out and connect them before you open the tent bag. Lay the fly flat over the footprint, inside-facing up. Assemble your poles on top of the fly. This keeps the fly acting as a temporary work surface and rain shield while you get organized.

Step 3: Pitch the Fly Inverted, Then Flip

This is the move most people skip. Clip or sleeve your poles to the fly while it’s still inverted on the ground. Once the poles are connected, flip the whole assembly right-side-up in one motion — same move as righting a canoe. The fly is now on the outside, poles are arched, and your tent body is still dry in its bag.

Step 4: Stake the Fly First

Get at least four fly stake points down before you do anything else. In wind-driven rain, an unstaked fly becomes a sail. I carry MSR Groundhog stakes — 6 inches of aluminum Y-beam that holds in everything from hardpack to soft soil. The wire stakes that come with budget tents pull out in real weather. Leave them home.

Step 5: Clip In the Tent Body

Now pull the tent body out from under the fly and clip it to the poles from inside the fly’s shelter. The fly is already overhead. You’re working in a protected space. Clip from the top down, stake the vestibule, and you’re done. Interior stays dry throughout the entire setup.

Step 6: Guy Out the Fly

In any wind above 15 mph, guy lines aren’t optional. Extend them fully and stake them at 45-degree angles from the fly’s attachment points. A taut fly sheds water faster, flaps less, and holds its shape under load. A saggy fly pools water and eventually leaks at the seams under hydrostatic pressure.

Gear Organization: Keep the Wet Outside

Your vestibule is your airlock. Everything wet — rain jacket, boots, gaiters, pack cover — stays in the vestibule. Nothing wet goes into the sleeping area. This sounds obvious until you’re exhausted at mile 18 and just want to collapse inside. Build the habit now.

Pack a small dry sack for your sleep system and keep it sealed until you’re inside the tent body with the door zipped. A soaked 900-fill down bag performs like a 300-fill bag. On a cold night that’s not a comfort problem, it’s a hypothermia problem.

Keep a small camp towel clipped inside the tent door to wipe down anything that does get wet before it goes into the sleeping area. I use a PackTowl Personal — 2.4 oz, lives permanently clipped to my tent’s interior loop.

Condensation Prevention: The Problem That Starts After Setup

Condensation kills more sleep than rain does. Two people breathing in a sealed tent generate roughly a liter of moisture per night. That moisture has to go somewhere, and if your fly isn’t vented and tensioned properly, it goes onto your gear.

Crack your vents. Every 3-season tent worth owning — the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2, the MSR Hubba Hubba NX, the Nemo Hornet Elite — has mesh vents near the top of the tent body and vent ports in the fly. Open them. Yes, even in the rain. The fly keeps rain out; the vents let moisture-laden air escape. A fully sealed tent in rain is a condensation factory.

Keep the fly taut. A fly with 2 inches of sag touches the tent body when wind pushes it. Where fly touches body, moisture transfers directly to the interior. Every stake point and guy line should be under real tension, not just finger-tight.

In sustained rain over multiple days, wipe down the interior walls each morning with your camp towel before packing. Condensation that sits overnight starts to wick into fabrics and insulation. Two minutes of wiping saves you from a clammy sleeping bag on night two.

The Right Tent Makes All of This Easier

Technique covers a lot of sins, but gear quality sets the ceiling. A tent with a full-coverage fly — one that reaches close to the ground on all sides — is dramatically easier to keep dry than a partial-coverage design. For serious rain camping, I’d take the MSR Hubba Hubba NX over most competitors at its weight class.
