I’ve handed those panels to kids at camp, used them as tent lights, and clipped them to a tarp ridgeline as task lights while cooking. The modularity works — it’s not a gimmick.

Late-season hunting camp, winter basecamp, or you just want the real-deal fuel lantern experience — the Coleman Northstar Dual Fuel is the one to own. It runs on Coleman liquid fuel or unleaded gasoline, puts out 1,500 lumens from a single mantle, and doesn’t care if it’s 10°F outside. I ran this lantern at a November elk camp in Wyoming where temps dropped to 8°F overnight and it lit the cook tent like a stadium.
The dual-fuel capability is the killer feature. In a pinch, you can run it on pump gas — real-world utility when you’re 200 miles from an outdoor retailer. Runtime is about 7 hours per tank on high. It’s loud, it produces heat, and it hisses. That’s part of the deal.

- Rechargeable AA/AAA (NiMH): A solid middle-ground. Eneloop Pro AAs in a Coleman Quad Pro give you the resupply flexibility of disposables with the long-term cost savings of rechargeables. Capacity runs slightly lower than alkaline at room temp, but they hold charge better over time.
- Disposable alkaline: Convenient, widely available, terrible in cold weather. Expect 30–40% capacity loss below freezing. Fine for summer camping, wrong choice for shoulder-season or winter use.
